Barton nervousness...

Okay, I am replacing my old, feeble 1800+ with a shiny and new 2500+. I got the retail version since at the time, it cost $1.50 less than the OEM (Take my heatsink...please!) and have a few questions.

First off, the wax on the core should be unmelted when it gets here, right? That would let me just pop off the heatsink and put on a decent one.

Next, I have a Tt CPU shim (I'm paranoid and I like to be able to jiggle my heatsink a bit, just in case). I have heard whispers that these leave a gap above the core when installed on Bartons. Is this true?

Also, can I use the Athlon retail heatsink on a vid card? If so, does anybody know how to remove the Corb I have epoxied on there now?

And finally, I know my board has a 1/6 divider, so I should have no trouble running at 166 FSB. Does it have a 1/7, so it will reset if/when I hit 200? I don't really like the idea of running my peripherals that far out of spec. Thanks for the help, folks!

Wax off the core? AMD Retail packaging has the CPU and HSF as seperate items - don't try to melt anything.

As for the shim, the problem is that T-Bred and Barton cores have the little black lacquer box with the CPU information on it, instead of on the core like older models. This lacquer box rises slightly from the substrate...if you put a shim on top of it, the HSF will not contact the core on that side, and *poof* the CPU blows up. Trust me on this one. Either don't use a shim, or carefully remove the portion of the shim that would sit on top of the lacquer box.

Athlon HSF on the video card? It's a big effin' HSF - I wouldn't recommend trying it.

As for your dividers, RTFM (sorry).

no need for a shim, and that stuff on the core doesnt seem to be coming on any cpus anymore. i dont know why, but as long as the cpu works i wouldnt worry about it

Don't use a shim, i've moved my ax-7 around so much and put a lot of pressure on it fighting with the clip to take it off and trying to put it on and it didn't do anything to my 2000+. I don't think i've ever read a post where anyone cracked their chip.

i think cracking a chip is just a myth now, i haven't heard of anybody do it in so long so maybe AMD makes stronger chips now? or heatsinks are designed better?

Just differant material on the core...not ceramic anymore.
