    Double sided DVD-Rs?

Has anybody seen doublesided DVD-Rs out there? Now, I know double layered DVD-Rs aren't supported by consumer DVD burners, but I would think double sided DVD-Rs are compatible...you just burn one side and flip it. For backup, double sided DVD-Rs would definitely make a lot of sense. So, has anybody seen them around or does anyone know if they're coming?

So would double sided CDRs, but I doubt that it will happen. Too much data to lose if the disc became physically damaged. Plus that would leave nowhere for those who use magic markers to write on the labels. LOL...

Actually, I'm pretty sure that there are double sided DVD-Rs. Not sure where they're available, and I'd presume that they're expensive, but I have seen some around online.

I don't think you'd be able to read that in a CD drive though.

Double-sided DVD-R's have been around for a while now. They have 4.7 GB's on each side. You record one side then flip it and record the other side.

Verbatim makes them, other companies too.

They're impractical though because you still have to get your butt off the sofa and flip the disc to play the other side, unless you have a rare DVD player that has "auto-reverse". People are lazy and don't want to leave the sofa.

That's why their prices are more than double that of single-sided DVD-R's, because of the lack of demand.

So far, I've only heard of double-sided DVD-R's, not DVD+R's, but I suppose that's possible too.

Still, I think it's good to know that we're not limited to 4.3/4.7GB storage per disc.

I've been using double-sided DVD-Rs for a little while now, and theres some things you should know though before buying.
(btw, I bought them from meritline)

Keep in mind, with a double-sided dvd-r, while you can burn boths sides, you can't label them. not with marker, and certainly not with printing or stickers. Just remember to make a organization system.
I'm not absolutely sure, but I'd say 95% sure there are NO 4x double-sided dvd-r media. 2x's are out there, but iirc, they're $5 each. mine are 1x, so at 55min to burn 1 side... ouch.
Even the 1x ones aren't cheap. I think they cost me slightly over $3 apiece.

However, its definitely nice to burn over 8 and a half gigs per disc... keep in mind thats something like 12 cds worth.
