    My setup

This probably isn't anything special, but what do you think to the following:

    Athlon xp 2700+
    Gigabyte nforce2 board
    512mb DDR ram
    Maxtor diamondmax 120gb 7200rpm
    Asutek 52r 52w 24rw
    Radeon 9600 128mb ddr agp 8x
    Englight case & 300w psu
    21" monitor

The new setup comes to about £580, excluding soundcard, monitor, keyboard etc. I didn't think the 2800+ was worth the slight extra performance for £30...

first skip the 2700 and get the 2500+ the extra L2 cache is worth it, and upgrade your vcard to a 9700 pro or non pro its your choice, and i would get a gig of ram, but thats just me

Make sure you ditch that cheapo PSU and pick up at least a 350 watt Enermax or Antec

    >>Gigabyte nforce2 board

Abit NF-7 is much better mobo.

    >>512mb DDR ram

    >>Radeon 9600 128mb ddr agp 8x

9500 Pro (if you can still find one, or 9700 non-Pro

NO WAY. Get an Antec SX635II or SX835II, both come with a good PSU.

    Have fun building!
