From Gateway to... eMachines?

My dad's computer is about 3 years old. He is wanting to upgrade it to a new computer and get an LCD monitor (which he is going to give to me

) So I obviously want him to get a new computer for our house and so I can have the LCD for college. He was looking at this eMachine: http://www.emachines.com/products/pr...Machines_T2625

I used to remember eMachines being little crap computers. It is pretty cheap however. Would that be a good buy? Could I configure the same one for less money? Or configure a better one for a few hundred dollars more or even at the same price??? Just wondering if its a good buy!!!

I work at Circuit City (going on my second month here) and to be honest...I haven't seen ANY e-machines returned.

Yea, Emachines rock. I've had a K2-450 emachine for about 4 years now, i've never had a problem. Its currently acting as a broadband router and homework machine and as stable as ever. The cool thing about Emachines, is that they dont use any propietory parts, so its v. easy to upgrade e.t.c.

didn't really read the post but when it said eMachines I had to reply, I think they are the most cheapest and horrible make I have ever seen in my LIFE, there a pile of crap imo.

I don't know about that... my dad got an eMachine about 2 years ago and it gave him so much trouble that he eventually got a different computer. Their tech support stinks as well... Then again, that was about 2 years ago...

The biggest downfall of eMac computers is their PSU. They are underpowered units, and the cheapest that could had.

Emachines are like the Kia of the computer world - decent for bare-minimum tasks (web browsing and email) but don't try to do ANYTHING even somewhat demanding (even word processing, music creation, etc).

how is word processing demanding? Anyway.

IMHO, eMachines are crap. All my friends who have had them have had to replace at least one thing, if not all of the machine. They use the cheapest parts so they can bring the cheapest prices to the market. For something as expensive as a laptop, and something you are less likely to upgrade (and less easier to upgrade) I'd go for someplace that's more reputable, i.e. Dell, Toshiba, Compaq, Gateway, etc.)

I've actually got an e-machine right now while I'm busy building my own "Ultimate Machine". For $500 total system, you can't beat it. I dumped another 256mb ram for $35 and another $80 on a returned Radeon 9000 at Best Buy and now it's running better than my friends new Dell, lol. It's cerainly not incredibly fast. It does decently for gaming and video applications. It's not fast enough for my needs, thats why I'm building my own. I've had it for about 4 months, and not a single problem with it so far, and it looks pretty nice to boot (all silver/black). I'd buy another if it came down to needed a decent cheap computer. The only problem I have with it is that the mobo only has 2 memory DIMM's, which is kinda a pain, and the fact that it only supports up to pc2100 isnt exactly a great thing either. But what the hell do you expect for a complete boxed system with a monitor and all for $500??

Go with e-machines if your looking for a decent machine for a good price, you wont be disappointed.

Pfhh, you guys are wayyy too picky. The machines are absolutely fine for everyday *non cpu-intensive apps*.

EDIT: Not to mention, they are very low-cost PCs. Right now at C.C. you can get an emachine, a proview 17" monitor, and a HP DJ printer all for $369 after mail in rebates.

I joined this forum while trying to upgrade the video on my eMonster 550r. Up to that point it was a neat little system for a very cheap price. Look a bit to the future with this decision. You can buy a fairly cheap system from custom parts that may be a little more flexible for future upgrades. If it's a get-it-over-with situation though, I can't see any problem really.
