    865 with one DIMM ??

    Fellow Sharky members,

I am wondering if you can run the i865 chipset with just one stick of memory? Or do you have to run it in dual channel with two sticks?

    Thanks.

Well you can run it with one stick of RAM, but you won't take advantage of the dual-channel feature. Most would recommend running 2x512 though, since you get the massive amount of 1gb of RAM and the performance increase of dual-channel

That's a good point. I was thinking of just one stick to save money, but it turns out 2x256 is the same price. But how many RAM slots do most 865 boards have? If there's only 2 slots, then it's more difficult to upgrade to a gig of ram later on.

Is the IS7-E a good board? Does it have all the overclocking features that anybody could ever want?

    Thx.

DC DDR mobos usually have 4 dimms.

my suggestion, at least for now while memory prices are sky high: buy one stick of 512mb now, and a matching stick when you have more $$ and prices go down. unless you're benchmarking, you probably won't notice the speed difference.
