Could someone give me a rough price estimate for cable?

    Hey all,

I'm considering buying a subscription to a cable service. I'm currently subscribed to earthlink dial-up, which is insanely overpriced. I'm currently paying $37 (yes, thats right) for this crappy service that supposed to be unlimited, yet the bills get higher and higher the longer I'm online.

    But I digress.
I've never owned cable, or any high-speed internet for that matter, and have no idea what the price would be.
Can someone give me a rough estimate on the monthly costs of the typical cable service provider? Nothing too specific, just a rough figure, or what you pay for your cable access?

    Thanks so much!

christ! $37 for dialup. depends on the ISP, and if you rent they're modem or have your own. some don't even charge for renting a modem, but i paid like $45 and a month back i bought my own modem and i pay $40 a month for 1.5/128. DSL is usually $40 for 384/128 and up to $60 for 1.5/128, but the speed is constant unlike cable which can slow down sometimes if say everyone in your neighborhood has the same provider. but i rarely have slowdowns or problems, but then again i am major in networking, so i know more of what im doing. but ya, go for cable, best thing is, it frees up your phoneline. i think Roadrunner is the main cable ISP around phenoix, and it's one of the best and popular in the nation, but also check with the local tv cable company, they might have a better deal

$29/mo for 384/128. If you don't have your own modem its $9.95/mo to rent one. I bought my own modem for $80 shipped so it paid for itself in 8 months.

I had earthlink dial-up for 6 months in 2000 (crappy service, heck.. dial up is crap), then I switched to Time Warner Road Runner for $45, inluded $5 for the modem.

My brother lives in Phoenix, and has broadband. I'll ask him next time I see him what he has and how much he pays for it.

I use Cable America for my cable modem service and I think they are based in AZ.

im on earthlink cable.... $29 a month for first 6 months and it also inlcudes FREE earthlnk dial-up (i have no idea why you are paying $37 for just dialup from earthlink, when im getting cable AND dialup for $30)... the advertised speed is 2000/256 kbit.... although im actually getting higher than that (about 2500kbit downloads).. i highly reccomend it

I have Insight cable, and pay $43.00 a month with out modem rental. Bought the modem from the previous cable provider, "@home," at a subatantial discount. Cable is fast, you can get some ridiculous download speeds with it.

BTW: If you can afford cable, you will never want to use dial-up again.

    Another newbie question:

What kind of physical outputs will I need in my home to connect Cable or DSL?

(P.S. I do not have cable TV. Never have, never will)

You will need a coaxial jack.
It's a short rouns portrusion from the wall.
Most homes have them installed already.

If you sign up for cable, they'll tear you a new one if you don't already have.

Oh, and what do you have against cable anyways?

all you really need is an ethernet card since the coxial will just connect to the cable modem or a phoneline to the DSL. you can use the cable lines in the house even though you don't have cable tv

Just to let you know that most places charge you extra for cable internet if you don't get a cable tv package with it. Around here we have Comcast and here's how it breaks down:

$42 for internet if you own a cable modem and you get cable tv
$57 for internet if you own a cable modem and you don't get cable tv
Tack on $3 a month if you rent a cable modem instead of own one.

The funny thing is that you can get basic cable for $9 if you ask them (it's not listed on their website), so it's $49 for internet/tv or $57 for just internet.
