This is just bizarre! Can you help??
Hello all,
I have the most assanine problem with my computer.
Occasionally when logging onto the internet and cruising around for a few minutes like I always do, all of the sudden from out of the blue, for no apparent reason that I can see, my speakers will project a loud siren sound. In fact, it sounds just like a police siren. I have no idea why! First off, I only visit a few sites (Sharky, gameSpy, Yahoo Mail, hotmail, and thats about it), none of which would be questionable for having something malicious in them.
Anyway, as I type this, this Siren sound is going off right now after just checking sharky. The sound will persist even when I get offline, until I restart my system, then everything is fine and dandy. I have an up to date virus scanner/firewall. I've done many virus scans on my computer and it has never turned up anything else. There are no other problems with my rig at all.
This has happened maybe 4-5 times in the last 4 months or so, and is currently doing it right now. Does anyone have ANY idea at all what this could be? My computer works and acts just fine aside from this blaring siren coming from my speakers that won't go away.
What the heck is this?? All suggestions welcome!

What virus scanner are you using? The reason I ask is because the Tanpro virus does pretty much exactly what you're describing. You might want to try a different virus scanner just to be on the safe side.
Also, check your temps and whatnot, as it could be a system error warning.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm using Trend PC-Cillin 2002 with real-time monitor. It has an auto-update feature and it's last update was last night, so i figured I'd be safe.
That virus does seem to have some similarities, yet I don't experience the "screen shaking" that they describe and it only seems to happen once every few weeks randomly after logging on to the net.

Hardware Monitor
That is an interesting problem.
Never heard of it before, but I do know of some BIOS hardware monitors that will make an "alarm" sound when certain aspects of your system go over/under their limits. (Such as power/heat/etc.)
Also, I don't know if anyone else has had access to your system lately, but Virus scans will NOT pick up gag programs. (gag meaning someone wanted to bug you with a little program they installed)
If running XP/2000 check your task manager and see if any strange processes are running. Most likely if there is some bogus program running, it will show up on task manager.

It could very well be a prank that someone put on there. Just reinstall the operating system!
