Cant play any games! New vid card..

    Hey,

Ok whenever I tried to run a game, I would get all kinds of errors. My vid card was old and wanted a new one so I bought a MSI Geforce FX5600 w/ 128mb. But STILL I get the errors. Everytime I try to run any kind of new game, it gives me some error. The ONLY game I have gotten to work is Half Life in OpenGL.. and Direct3D but it looked messed up.

I decided to format the computer and start fresh with Windows Millenium.

I installed the vid card drivers off the cd, then installed updated Detonator drivers from nvidia's website.

Got DirectX 9.0.., Updated my Soundblaster Live! Drivers.. Everything I thought I would need to get the games to work.

Here are some examples of the errors I get:

    Ghost Recon
    Illegal Operation

    Morrowind
    Rendition Error ``

    Unreal II Demo

Error setting display mode: CreateDevice failed (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL). Please delete your Unreal2.ini file if this error prevents you from starting the game.

    UT2003 Demo
    UT2003 Build UT2003_Build_[2003-02-16_18.56]

    OS: Windows 98 4.90 (Build: 73010104)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 909 MHz with 255MB RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 (4523)

Error setting display mode: CreateDevice failed (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL). Please delete your UT2003.ini file if this error prevents you from starting the game.

    History: UD3DRenderDevice::UnSetRes <- CreateDevice <- UD3DRenderDevice::SetRes <- UWindowsViewport::TryRenderDevice <- UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

I think it has something to do with Direct3D.. Im really not sure.. I can think of any kind of drivers or anything I need..

    Any help is greatly apprecaited..

Some spec's of your system might help...

Try just the drivers off the cd or it could be that you DL'ed the wrong updates for the vid card

Well before I had these same problems on Windows 98, and now after formatting I used Windows ME. Both have the same problems so I dont think its the OS causing the problem..

What kind of motherboard? Some might not support the newer AGP cards.

I think it would help use a lot if we had full specs of the machine that is having the problem.

    Hey,

Ok sorry ill try to give you as much information as I can.

Here are the main things in my computer:

    Motherboard: Asus A7M266
Video Card: MSI NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 w/128mb
    Sound Card: Soundblaster LIVE! Value
    Ram: 256MB DDR
Operating System: Windows Me (4.90, Build 3000)
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) Processor, MMX, 3DNow, ~900MHz (dunno why dxdiag says 900mhz, but its a 1.2ghz..)
    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0 (4.09.0000.0900)
    Video Card Driver: Detonator 45.23

Now its strange because after installing the 45.23 Nvidia drivers, I thought that when I went to the driver properties under Device Manager, it would say version 45.23, but instead it still says 4.14, and also says 4.14 in dxdiag (as seen in my copy/paste below)... Dont know if this should be like that..

Here is a bunch of other info I copy/pasted from the dxdiag that some of you may need:

    Monitor: AOC A785
    Monitor Max Res: 1600,1200
    Driver Name: nvdisp.drv
    Driver Version: 4.14.0010.4523 (English)
    DDI Version: 9 (or higher)
    Driver Attributes: Final Retail
    Driver Date/Size: 7/28/2003 15:19:00, 107616 bytes

    DDraw Status: Enabled
    D3D Status: Enabled
    AGP Status: Enabled
    DDraw Test Result: Not run
    D3D7 Test Result: Not run
    D3D8 Test Result: Not run
    D3D9 Test Result: Not run

And lastly here are two more error messages I get when trying to run these games:

    Silent Storm Demo
    Unsupported Video Card

    Raven Shield Demo
    OS: Windows 98 4.90 (Build: 73010104)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 909 MHz with 255MB RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 (4523)

    Assertion failed: RenDev [File:\Data Manager\Version\SPDEMO\Local\WinDrv\Src\WinViewport.cpp] [Line: 471]

    History: UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

Hope this will help someone to lead me to the answer..

I have a computer exactly like this one , with a geforce 3 instead of the FX though.

Anyways, the default/safe/factory setting for the BIOS is 900 MHZ, even though the processor is at 1.2GHZ. Which suggests something went wrong during install.
There's a setting from 100 to 133 that will put it back to 1.2 GHZ, anyways,

Im guessing the problem is that agp something isnt configured/detected right in the bios, thats where my knowledge fades off.

    Hey,

Ok I think I have found the root of the problem.. Those game errors were pointing me in the direction of thinking the problem has somethign to do with Direct3D. I decided to test the "not run" tests I posted above in dxdiag. Everything went fine

    DDraw Status: Enabled
    D3D Status: Enabled
    AGP Status: Enabled
DDraw Test Result: All tests were successful.

BUT when I tested the "Direct3D Acceleration" here is what I got:

D3D7 Test Result: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
D3D8 Test Result: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
D3D9 Test Result: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)

It appears Direct3D is the cause of the problem.. A couple of the games errors I posted above also said something about D3D:

    CreateDevice failed (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL).

Hmm.. does anyone know what could be causing the problem with the Direct3D?

    PikachuMan, thx for the info

The latest bio`s update on ASUS`s website for your MB, provides support for the 4200, so your MB might not support the 5600.

    Hey,

Hmm wow I didnt notice that GeForce 4's are only supported with the latest bios.. My card isnt a GeForce 4, but it could still be part of the problem.. Unfortunately I dont know how to install the new bios..

When I download the update all it is is a single file:

    AM261007.awd

I dont know what to do with the file.. I tried reading there Bios Flashing instructions but there are like 4 different sets of instructions not sure which one to follow.. also, the files they show in the instructions are .rom files not .awd like the one I downloaded.

But still I dont think this will solve my problem. The reason is because I had this same problem with my old video card before I even formatted. Now I have formatted, reinstalled everything fresh, updated everything and all on a completely different OS.. and the same problem persists. So I dont see how it can be any type of software.. but hardware rather..
