NIS is not running

It shows up in Backupexec after installing the Unix agent. I can pick files and browse just fine. When I try to backup anything I get one of the 2 following errors:

a000848c - unable to attach to one of the drives
a000fc30 - A communications error has occured

The communications error stops the Backup Exec Agent for Windows Servers service

-Tried agent 5.1 revision 5.036 and 5.045
-Tried steps mentioned in Tech ID 258334
-Am I supposed to be able to telnet to port 6101? I can not even locally on the linux servers.
