My PSU mod

I'v been working on a new PSU for my daughters computer.

I cut off the drive power cables and mounted molex plugs in the back.

I made custom length cables for the drives. I used 3/4" heat shrink tubing to make the boots for the molex plugs. and right angle plugs on the drive end.

How'd you pull that molex plug mod off? That's a badass solution to those of us who can't afford a modular unit! GJ!

Any chance on a little walkthrough?

EDIT: I really like how you pullled the heatshrink over the top of the molexs... Why didn't I think of that?

wow, i'm glad i looked in here. that's truely sweet. detailed pics of the assembled rig are required here - you do know that right? oh and a brief explanation of how you mounted the female molex connectors in the PSU would be nice.

This is what I was talking about in the other
Thread about being able to plug or unplug your power cables in as needed. Very nice MOD and Please, Please add this sweet little MOD to our How-To Thread.. I have a Spare PS sitting around that I would be willing to try this on if it isn't to complicated.

Gary's looks nicer then these two. For the simple fact that he doesn't have all of them hanging out the back like that.

Ok, I took the PSU apart and got a photo of the inside:

The hard part was finding a spot where the plugs would clear the insides of the PSU. The back of the PSU has small squares for airflow, an opening 2 squares high and 5 wide was just the right size for a Molex connector. I cut the openings and bent the resulting tabs in to hold the connectors in place. (You could also cut the openings with a dremmel and glue the plugs in.) I cut off the drive power lines and soldered the wires to the Molex plugs, I covered the joints with heat shrink, when I do another mod like this I will just get new crimp terminals and eliminate all the solder joints. The wires were routed over the plugs to avoid the heat sink and to clear the bottom fan in the PSU.

Here is a photo of the Molex boots before and after shrinking:

They were made with a 1 1/4" long piece of 3/4” heat shrink tube on the connector, and a 1” long piece of 3/8” shrink tube over the end of the sleeving.

Here it is installed in the computer:

I was planning on hiding the wires behind the drives, but I decided to have them visible since they were all sleeved. The inverter for the CCFL lights was mounted below the rear exhaust fan (I wanted it as far from the HD as possible). All the wires in the case are sleeved, the one running in front of the MB is going from the rear fan to the MB fan header.

And with the CCFL lights on:

I have two 6" purple tubes in the case.

THIS web page shows the front of the case and the stealthed drives.

All I have to do now is cut the hole for the window and her computer will be done for now.
