GAH! Stupid cave rats!
I just started playing morrowind today, and i joined the fighters guild. I am a dark elf with a long sword. I got my first mission-to kill some cave rats. First one was easy enough, but, then when i go up stairs to kill the rest, i always die! I'm halfway across the room and they still hit me, but i can never hit them back! What the hell am i supposed to do?

Either get more experience before you attempt the quest or try to take on the rats one at a time. Early in the game you'll find that you may not be strong enough to take on some opponents in the quests you're given. Just go do something else for a while and then come back. You're under no time constaints and can do what ever you want, when you want. That's the best thing about the game.
Don't worry, after a while you'll find that the game is too easy for your level. Still a great game though.
Edit: PS, Find yourself some good armor in the weight you need and a good weapon.
