What to buy what to buy

    price limit is 1k

Id like a DVD player, CD burner not nessesary

    Ethernet port, wifi not nessesary

    decent battery life,

Im not afraid of a heavy laptop,

A decent size screen would be nice

Its maily for school work, Word Processing, some Visual C++ compiling

but I would like it to run some games, I dont need it to run anything like doom 3 but things like Rise of Nations, Sim golf, Shadowbane, Icewind Dale II, Baulders Gate II.

The big shooters Ill save for my main desktop rig.

Actually quite a few manufacturers have units under $1K. I forget where, but I read a report on the best ranked laptops, and suprisingly enough, there were quite a few no-name units in there. Of course IBM came out #1, but then again I'm kinda partial that way!!

For a grand expect a Celeron processor or AMD mobile, 256MB DDR or maybe if you're lucky 512, and a 14.1 inch screen. I know Dell has some in that arena, and with a little searching I'm sure you will come up with more choices than you'll know what to do with!

    Good luck,

Check this thing out, I have the ECS g732 and its a good laptop! I bought it from the same people too. It has a 15inch, 2.4ghz, 256mb, 20gb hdd, no OS but im sure you have one lying around, no floppy becaue it comes with a DVD/cdrw combo. only $956 which means you can upgrade to a 30gb and still stay within budget since it has free shipping.
If im not back in five minutes, wait longer
