Good Morning my people.

Well, I was chatting on IRC today when I suddenly noticed whenever I pressed "o" or "q" or some other keys, my audio would mute. At first I thought it was an issue with the keyboard, but a AVG virus search turned up Java/ByteVerify virus. AVG supposedly had :healed: it, only 1 infected file found. No strange key functions now.

is what macaffee turned up.
However according to them, the exploit it uses is

This detection covers Java applets that attempt to exploit the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-011 vulnerability. This severity of this vulnerability is considered to be critical. It allows an attacker to execute malicious code, simply by visiting an infectious website. Detections of this exploit do not necessarily mean that any malicious code was executed. It simply means that a Java applet was found to contain the exploit code. Conversely malicious code may have been run, which could result in any number of modifications to the system.
Now I patched this a while ago, and the version number is correct for the fixed one (according to the microsoft site instructions).

The main broswer I use, however, is mozilla, which needs a seperate java thing installed from Sun Micro. So, how do I cheak if thats allowed the trojan to get on?

Another possibility could be from IRC, but Im on a 56k only on for like 2-3 hours at a time, behind a software firewall, and all windows update has no critical patches. What more can I do then?

I would like any help as to how to keep this from happening again.
