But SBC, the No. 2 regional phone company and a major local telecommunications service provider in the Midwest and West, has received about 300 such subpoenas and has refused to answer any of them.

Nice. I use SBC and I respect how they want to protect people's privacy.

Most big Internet providers think that the original decision in the Verizon case essentially validated the subpoenas that the recording industry sent to other companies. SBC, however, has taken the offensive and filed its own lawsuit against the recording industry group in California.

"We are going to challenge every single one of these that they file until we are told that our position is wrong as a matter of law," James D. Ellis, general counsel for SBC, said Monday in a telephone interview.
Good for them. The RIAA may have some justification for their actions, but there is a point where the line needs to be drawn. Sacrificing the privacy rights of thousands of people is beyond that line.

Excellent. I it is good to see an ISP standing up for its users rights.

Or maybe SBC is just treating the subpoenas like they treat their customers... they'll get around to answering them in a few months.

I like their stance against the RIAA, but I wouldn't go so far as to heap praise on SBC for their privacy policies. They won't hesitate to share your personal information with marketing partners when it's to their own benefit:

I agree its nice to see what would happen when they deny to release such info.. But the courts can press on them and make them sing a new tune if need be

Now we get to see how the ISP will or will not get involved... and what kind of outcomes we can expect..

I think SBC expects to get something out of doing this, like an increase in subscribers to their service.

Then 4 months later Paul gets sued by the RIAA and he asks how did this happen and then they say it was easy all we had to do was buy a list from SBC.
