Yikes - 100W for the CPU
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/32841.html
Well, it's from The Register, but expands on earlier news from Geek.com:
http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/20...0805021178.htm
The summary here is that Prescott (the P4's successor) is going to have to a power rating over 100 Watts (103 is one estimate). That's a whole lotta power - and heat - for a CPU.
Should anticipate 500W power supplies for desktops soon? Whatever happened to Energy Star requirements?

I saw that - thermodynamics is really catching up to Mr. Moore. Intel is going to have a real problem with their next product cycle. I'm not sure manufacturers would go for water cooled procs on P5 pc's.

But you'd have to admit that more and more companies are going with water-cooling.
And there's that diamond thing that can withstand a lot of voltage and heat.
So hopefully, that will take over before quantum computing.

ive heard reports that intel has this under control, and may even hold off the release of presscott to get the heat down.

I don't like this:
"So, Intel is working had to figure out how the rest of the computer can be made more energy efficient to cover the extra losses introduced by Prescott."
So instead of working harder on making their processor more efficient... they decided they would just make the rest of computer components more efficient instead.

I too read that Intel is trying real hard to get the power consumption down to around 90w before releasing. Might cause some delay in the time it was supposed to debut. But would rather have a delay than have a "volcano" inside my computer.

Jeebus, that's a lot of heat. And how exactly can they focus on reducing power consumption in the rest of the PC when they don't make 80% of the components in a computer?

Who? With the possible exception of Falcon Northwest or Alienware, I doubt if any even offer it as an option.
