What exactly is IRC?

I've been reading that IRC can be used to access files. I have no idea what it is and how to access it. Can somebody tell me a little about it?

IRC is a chat system. It was not made for P2P. So sharing files on IRC will be pretty much the same as sharing files on AIM. You have to know people that want to send to you. Some channels on the main servers like EFNet/Undernet run fservs but most stuff open for random people is low quality garbage.

mirc is one of the many programs that you use for IRC. I use Polaris.

You can find many things depending on the server your connected. I used it almost 2 years for my Anime needs. (not anymore)

It is highly recommended to have a good internet connection.
