    SATA or IDE

seems everyone is jumping on the sata bandwagon, is it faster at all over ata100/133 ? my WD special edition drives don't get over 40 megs or so a sec, i don't see how sata could be any faster than current IDE drives, sorta like dual channel in an AMD setup...

    umm

    correction

    SATA vs. PATA

    both are IDE drives

and SATA has the potential to be faster cause its average seek is about 1/3rd a PATA drive.

Seek time is a mechanical function, though, which means the interface shouldn't affect it too much one way or the other. SATA will eventually be faster though, if for no other reason than it will be replacing PATA and will incorporate newer drive technologies.

if you are going to do ata, stick with pata. Sata drives are still not fast enough to be worth the premium, unless you are getting something that is more than 7200 rpms. So either go pata if you are going to 7200rpm route, sata if you want a most bang for the buck 10krpm drive, and 15k scsi if you simply want the best.

Parallel with a nice raid card in raid 0 equals great speed.
