    my system

Look in my sig. Its now just about a year old. Anything i should change? Whats the fastest cpu i can plug and play. I havnt been around the forums much lately (been enjoying dc and eod) Looks like its about time for some upgrades tho. With all these new games coming out. my cpu has been stable at xp2000 speeds since ive had it.

First thing I would replace is mobo because you can use everything else you already have with an nforce2 board (abit nf7-s).

Honestly you could do a complete Motherboard/CPU/Memory overhaul.

Wouldnt be on the Cheap, and it would loop side your system a bit (necked by the card). But your board is what VIA KT266A/KT333. Perhaps wait a little while for the Athlon FX to roll out, or for the 2.8c to drop down a fraction. Then you can upgrade the vid card when DX9 starts to get a stronger hold in the market.

You can pop a 2400+ in there I believe. That's the highest that the 133Mhz Thoroughbreds go as far as I know. If your motherboard supports 166Mhz bus, you could go with an even faster Barton. And yeah, a DX9 card would be nice, but really you should wait until HL2/Doom3 come out since they'll be cheaper then and your GeForce4 will definitely hold you over til then.

Yeah good luck finding them though. I was gonna get one for my old board and I said screw it because they were so darn hard to find.

I think the old nForce2, 2400+ or Barton, and 512mb of Buffalo Tech or Crucial would suit him well. With that budget you're better off going AMD.

Wouldn't the mobo default the fsb to the highest the board can handle and not the highest the cpu can handle?

Actually...depending on what your board is designed to support, it will default to the LOWEST FSB setting it has and maintain the hard coded multiplier.

    If it supports that multiplier.
