I think a problem you may be having is calling it GOTM, Game Of The Month implies the idea that it is the top game that came out this month, not a selection of games in years past.
A common usage of the "Game Of The X", would be GOTY, for instance a fair share of people would complain if i gave Doom 1 the 2002 award for my website, because this is not when it came out. The "Game of The X" is referring to games that were released in that period of time.
A lame example of a title that would be better suited to your use would be "Old Game Pick of the month of october", a title that lets people know that this is about a old game that you thought stood above the other and want to put on a pedestal for a month (which is what GOTx's purpose is).
True your forums are titled Nostalgia, however this could very well just because the forum creator liked the word nostalgia, or its about a modern game that came out in the month of october, and poll about that was created there due to some type of demand.

Oh & to avoid this post being spam, ninja gaiden was on the nintendo and was made some time back in the late 80s. There were ninja gaiden games on other systems, but they weren't as good as the nintendo ones in my opinion.

Next months #1 game I can almost assure you all will be Max Payne 2. If it turns out to be suckage like Halo then I may have to pull out my Matrix moves and send heads spinning (excuse my lamerness there Matrix: Revolutions trailer got me yelling "Yeah YEAH" while drooling all over myself).

Why should what part of the year it comes out matter. If you're gonna say that than it would make sense for it to be considered for the next year, but it just wouldn't be right to have a game released in 2003 to be GOTY for 2004.
