If you get the right 98se and are in fact able to re-open the other 4 rendering pipes than far and away it will be a better performer. That if depends first and foremost on getting a 98se which has its memory chips configured exactly as they are on a real 98 or 98pro and not the four in a row models

9700 pro. This is especially true given that many of the 9800 SE's dont mod well - give artifacts, etc.

At least with a 9700pro you're guaranteed a 9700pro. The soft mod of a 9800se is by no means guaranteed to work.

    Talking

get a 9800 np if you must...

You won't be disappointed... Make sure you take a look @ the card before you buy...Samsung 3.3n or better is recommended...

I have this card...I once i clock it to match the XT speed...but I did not run 3Dmark though...it is too hot...

I need better cooling to do that benchmark...

Basically Pro, np, XT are using the same core...imo.

The problem with the 9800se is that you don't why the 4 pixel pipes were disabled. It could have been a regular 9800 that had some bad pixel pipes, which got disabled and became an se, which would give you problems with image artifacts or outright failure to work. Or you might get lucky and it is a fully functional 9800 chip that had pixel pipes disabled to meet demand for se chips.

The biggest problem is that you can't tell before purchase and mod attempt which scenario is going to play out.

9700 pro...even if the mod does work...there's still a good chance that the card will die a few months later...

Im just curious... what are you basing this on??? Any card can die a few months later but why is there more of a chance the soft modded se will die??

I'm basing this on many of the radeon 9500np softmods that worked and later on died or reported serious artifacts later on...

Ok, maybe the SE is different... well we won't know until something happens.
