yeah of course it is. it is just a bunch of options to the c compiler, and that goes for any *nix there is.

But with gentoo, everything is so nice and automated with portage, and gentoo has such nice documentation aswell as the best forum there ever was. It was a great that they incorporated this idea that the bsds have used so long now.

For a system I was going to change frequently and update very often I would use gentoo just because portage making like so much easier, but if I just planned on installing the os, and making no major cahnges, I would use redhat or slackware since the gentoo install (even with stage3 and grp) is no fun at all.

woah, I didn;t think systems that old could support over 2 gig hard drives or something like that.

gentoo really rocks. i just put it on a PII300 i picked up (64mb/4mb matrox) to experiment with firewalls/mail servers, etc. it took about a week to compile everything (with X), but it is f-a-s-t. it boots in like 15 seconds.

    HEY!!!!

    I can run Commander Keen!!!!

Im planning on giving Doom3 and HL2 a run on this machine! I know I can do 1024x768@ 32-bit and 60hz... Well that is what my math tells me

I would give 85Hz a shot, but my monitor wont do 85Hz max of 75

yeah, actually I am currently thinking of getting this P2 266 box up and running. I alreeady run gentoo on my mainbox, so I think im just going to put windows on this one (probably 2k). I am going to add my 40 120gxp (limited to 32gb) to it and another 128 megs of ram. It would be a fine box just for web browsing and remote ssh sessions. There are a good number of programs that work well only in windows (or only exist in windows) so I don;t want to not take advantage of that either.

I'd need a new case (old one is like, really horrible, I don't want to touch it, give you cuts, and it is a freaking eye sore), some more ram (each 128 stick is like 20 bucks or so), and that is all. Anyoen think this is worth putting anything into? I mean it still works, why not upgrade it s a little and use it for stuff.
