    Thats a hard one.

First to get something moderately decent its gonna have to be used.

Second its gonna have to be one of those cheap *** huge deals. The ones that use desktop processors for price not speed (Pentuim 4Ms are like $400!)

    Just stay away from Dell.
    Desktop 1: Raidmax X-1 ATX, A64 3500+ on Asus A8N5X nForce4, PCIe Geforce 7800GT 256mb, 2x512mb PC3200,
    Desktop 2: Alientower , P4B 2.53Ghz O/C to 3.04ghz on ASUS P4B533, r9800pro 128mb, 2x512mb PC2100,
    Dell i8100 Laptop: P3 1.13ghz, 64mb r9000, 384mb.

You should think about getting an AMD, because the Pentium 4M and the Pentium-M(Centrino) are both WAY out of your price range. Or you should think about spending a few hundred more dollars and getting something decent.

If you can spend 1000 dollars I would suggest you get the Acer TravelMate 290 with the Pentium-M 1.3 Ghz.

    Gateway
    Gateway M305s
$799, and it will do pretty well.
    I bought a 450sp + a few months back....
    (M305s is the "newer platform")

If you're willing/able to go Mac then you can get a nice PowerBook for around $750 on eBay. It'll be an older one with like a 500MHz G4 but it'll deffinetly do what you want it to. You said 2d right? Little to no 3d. And one of those would probably even run 3d stuff if you wanted, just not super well. Just my 2 cents
Friends don't let friends buy Dell.
