on a side note, i bought a mod chip as soon as it came out for the ps2. i unscrewed the ps2. took a look at it. and screwed it back in. i had enough trouble getting the ps1 to work with it. but all the stuff in the ps2 is much smaller. and i dont have the tools to do such fine soldering.

Yes, the soldering points inside of the PS2 are tiny! To avoid damaging the console, you need to:
    1. Know what you're doing
    2. Have a PS2 v4 or later (preferably v7)
    3. NOT HAVE A CRAPPY NO-SOLDER MOD (these things destroy PS2s within hours)
    4. Not have a cheap-*** clone or v1 mod

I have modded 4 PS2s myself, all a year ago, each with a real Magic 3.0 or 3.1 further modified with an on/off switch to bypass any possibly modchip detection schemes Sony may come up with in the future. All the PS2s still run perfectly, with the exception of my one friend's, because he thought it would be a cool idea to open up his PS2 and replace the 3.0 with a 3.1 (which is pointless if you have the aformentioned switch) himself with absolutely no soldering experience. Long story short, he kept the iron on the board for FAR too long in a couple points and fried his board.

My point is - Don't blame modchips for screwing up consoles, blame the installer. Unless its your fault for buying a cheap-*** mod, or the horrible no-solder mod.

EDIT: And if your PS2 is v1-4, dont expect those things to last long on their own, the lasers in them are crap.

If Xbox hits $99, I may have to get one. Thx to Nintendo for cutting the sales of PS2 enough for them to lower their prices too. Go Nintendo!!! (BTW, I'm one of the sad victims that had to pay Sony $299 just a few months before they lowered their price to $189. )

I'm serious, I must be real damn lucky. I got my PS2 the X-Mas it came out (so I can take a good guess that it's a v.1 or so), and it's been running as good as new ever since then. No breakdowns, no nothing. So has my PS1, and it was the first one ever, too (the one with terrible heat management)

Hell, I think my DDR hard pads will break before this thing ever will...

    So this is real?

I'll have to buy another one since someone "borrowed" mine 2 years ago

And why does using the no soldering mod ruin a PS2? I'm not touching my PS2 with a soldering iron, so the plug and play solution is very tempting.

    DONT DO IT!
Seriously, everyone I know that installed one of those had their PS2 break down within a matter of days. Taking the mod out does NOT fix it, and Sony wont touch it.
My best friend stuck one in, and her PS2 stopped working an hour later.
