Post my computer thinks it's a budgie...

every now and then it'll just make these odd squeaking noises, and i'm really not sure what it is. Just now it happened every time i hit the u key, and a couple of others... other times it isn't linked to the keyboard at all.. it just started doing this about a month ago... it does it on and off... any idea what it could be?

    sounds like a mouse problem

the only things in a computer I know of that can make squeaking noises are fans, mice, and in extreme cases, hard drives. If you think it might be your hard drive, you should backup everything and proceed to freak out.

how regularly does this happen? and how loud is the squeak? could you try a different keyboard?

Two most common strange noise makers are :
1.) Power supply fan or any fan in your system that could possibly have a bearing going bad.
2.) ::shutters at the thought:: Hard drives tend to make strange noises in the early stages of going bad.
You might try opening the case and seeing if you can tell which device is making the noise the next time it starts.

Not anything like a PC speaker beep or whine? BRB's right...you should really open up the case and have a look inside. Unless, of course, there's a budgie in there trying to get free. In which case it'd be a real good idea to open up your case.

What, may I ask, is a "budgie"?

Okay, i guess i'll get into my computer soon. it literally sounds like a little budgie... ittitating little squeaks... not anything related to the computer's sound tho... if it is the fan, how do i fix it? will a bit of wd-40 work at all?

It probably is my harddrive, knowing my luck... this computer's been feeling like it's gonna die for a couple of months now... at least i don't really have all that much stuff on here that i'll miss so much that i can't get elsewhere... except for everyone's phone number!

I hope it's not the harddrive...although a new computer WOULD be nice...

If it's a fan just replace it. Most can be had for $10-$15. You have a fan inside your power supply box also that will not be visible looking into the case. It can be seen by looking at the back of the case.

If you feel it's the harddrive just back up everything while it's still working. Get a new drive and recover what you want.
