what could be wrong with my new system?

my newly build PC [in my sig] first of all has problems turning on....
some times it will rev up for like 2 seconds and then shut off

and when it does stay on...nothing happens: black screen, i dont here any kinda beeps or attempts of anything trying to load

-the hard drive is completely empty
-i do have missing pins on my crt so i dont know if thats keeping it from connecting to my video card via the crt-dvi converter
-i do see signs of power getting to my optical mouse/keyboard
    -PowerMax psu
    Input: 200-240 [6A]
    Output: +5v/30A
    -12V/.8A
    -5v/.3A

-any suggestions on what the problem is?

    thank you very much

generic psu's are the devil...i would consider that as a possible culprit. It could be possible that it can't handle the strain of all of those components...try unplugging the cd/floppy drives and anything else that's un-necessary(case fans for now) and trying again...if it does power up, you know it's your psu....if not, i could still be the psu or something else.....but try that first, as no one else has responded yet.

If this won't do it look over the heat sink and make sure it's on right. And try memory in a new slot. Lots of crt's are missing pins. good luck p.s do you have the extra power hooked up to the vid card?

yes i have extra power to my video card....i plugged my pc into a friend's montior which showed an indication that it was connected...but when turning it on his monitor stayed black too....
so im ruling out video for now

also i have been able to keep the power on with out it shutting off after 2 seconds....still no signs of a post

im thinking its a mobo or cpu problem [maybe i screwed up somewhere with the paste on the cpu to installing the heatsink...or maybe i screwed up by forgetting to put the spacers on between the mobo and the chasis for a second {but i didnt turn on the power when the mobo was hooked like this}]

i also first accidentally turned on my system with my jumpers set to "Clear CMOS" mode... dont know if that coulda made a problem

im seriously thinking of surrendering to a PC repair place -does best buy have good tech people?

i would try a different stick of memory...i hear that once in awhile geil doesn't cooperate with some systems. Also, try a different processor if possible. That would rule out some more possibilities.

With this, you have just killed your motherboard. Your friedyour bios chip. I cleared the cmos with power still running, and my 8rda+ was killed on the sspot. the post code, (or lack thereof) wa CF, indicating a BIOS problem. I had flashed my bios, and my mobo was dead. Try swapping in another motherboard. If it works, RMA that motherboard immediately.

Will, if the rom part of your bios still works, there a chance you can remove all the psu cables from the the MoBo, take the battery out for 24 hours, and start over.

You could have zapped your BIOS, but with the way the system started responding after removing your video card, it could very well be that your PSU can't handle the load you are asking it to. It could also be a bad video card or AGP slot. Try to get you hands on a 400+ Watt PSU (good name brand) and see what happens with the card re-installed. I'm assuming you are getting your beeps with no video card at all installed.

I have generic case ($39 bucks) that came with a Powmax 350 watt PS.
After upgrading from a Radeon 8500LE to an ATI 9700 PRO the Powmax was fried in less than a week. It simply couldn't meet the power demands of the 9700PRO...

I replaced it with an Antec Smartpower 350 watt and all is well...

    Try a better PS.
