Win XP doesnt recognize one of my cd drives...
I have win XP home ( SP 1 and all current updates ok ) , a Sony cd-burner , and a generic cd-rom. Asus P4PE-X mobo .
When I check on "my computer", the cd-rom drive icon is always missing .
I can go into the control panel, and in the device manager, click on " scan for hardware changes" and it'll find the missing cd-rom. It says it's a Sony cd-rom, which it isnt ( I dont think ) . Once I do this, everything works ok.
Any suggestions ?

see if the cdrom is actually in the device manager- If it is it may have a red cross on it. If it has right click on it and remove the device and then reboot. This should make it reappear.

This happens every time you reboot? If so, I'd switch the CD-roms on the ide chain and see if it is recognized on reboot. I have had similar situations where this solved the issue. You might want to try also in single mode to see if it will see just the cd-rom in question by itself. Also, trying on a different ide channel might help also.

thanks for the advice,
the BIOS does seem to recognize both cd roms, as it's booting. I also have a "Dazzle" drive for my digital camera ,it's plugged into a usb port. The comp recognizes it as a "portable drive" . If I unplug the dazzle drive, the comp recognizes both cd-roms ok.
The cd-rom isnt in the device manager period , just missing.
