The graphics don't look that great, you would probably be ok with that.

I liked a few of the older FF games; but I tend not to pay $9/month to play any game.

When I first heard about FFXI being a MMORPG, I started telling myself it would blow. Why, you ask? The premise was simple: to set myself up to be amazed.
And my GAWD did it work!
After being a slave to EQ for 4 years, FFXI looks refreshing. Multiclassing, class switching, beautiful graphics, chicobos, and most importantly, something new-yet-established. I am *really* looking forward to getting the game and trying it out. Just a few other quick questions, though...
1) Will there be guilds?
2) Is the game mostly built around grouping, along the same vein as other FF titles?
3) Does it honestly eat 6 GB? lol
Anyhoo, time for bed so I can wake up and see if I won my CPU on eBay. Failing that, grats NewEgg $85 more. lol
It takes an idiot to do cool things. That's why it's cool. (FLCL)
Antec Nine Hundred; Thermaltake TR2 RX 550w; Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L; Intel Core 2 Duo E6750; Stock heatsink; 4x1GB OCZ Reaper HPC; XFX 9800 GTX; 640GB Western Digital Black; LG DVD+/-RW

There's a bug currently in the graphic settings which even if you enabled bump mapping, 1024 resolution textures, mip mapping or AA, it doesnt work, they're not enabled. Both ATI and geforce owners have that problem, likely to be patched rapidly. There's also no tree & grass swaying yet, even though you hear the "sound" of the wind on the leafs. There's also no weather effects, even though you hear storms and rain drops but see nothing.
When it will be patched it will look a lot better.
1) Will there be guilds?
2) Is the game mostly built around grouping, along the same vein as other FF titles?

1) Yes, they're called "Linkshells". The way it works is the leader buys a linkshell at a kingdom's capital for 8000 gils, you choose the name and also the pearl's color which will appear next to your guild's players name. There's 3 level of status in a linkshell. Shell holder, Sack holder, Pearl holder. The Shell holder can distribute pearls/sacks at will, and remove people from the group as well, including both Sack and Pearl holders. They can also change the welcoming message. The Sack holders can distribute pearls at will, and remove pearl holders, and change the welcoming message. The pearl holders may only chat on the linkshell.
Same system as leader, co leaders and members, just different names.
2) Yes and no. You can solo your way to the top but obviously, peoples that group together will see much more of the land since they'll be able to go further and also beat cooler boss. The good thing is that every high end monsters in the game are made in mind that you can kill them with 18 peoples max if you have the right level. There's no god like monsters ala EQ where you require 70+ players just to bring it down. Getting 18 peoples together is a lot easier and generally a better experience than 70+, you know eachothers better, you can work a better strategy and its more a rush, you likely feel more part of the fight than in EQ where you feel like some lamb thrown at the monster.
3) Indeed, the initial patch is also ~187MB hehe.
There's also a system i forgot to include in the overview, its the EXP chaining. The con system in FFXI is like this
~Too weak to be worthwhile
~easy prey
~decent challenge
~even match
~tough
~very tough
~incredibly tough
~impossible to gauge!
Too weak to be worthwhile monsters will actually run away from you. Anyway, the EXP chaining works that when you kill an even match or higher monster, a time gauge will open and if you kill another even match or higher monster within that time frame, you will get a bonus chunk of EXP. You can chain up to 6 monsters like this.
There's also crystal synthesis jobs i didnt include in the overview.
-Fishing
-Blacksmith
-Goldsmith
-Carpender
-Alchemy
-Cooking
-Leatherworking
-Sewing
-Bonework
And a cool fight against an angry boss

Damnit all to hell.... I just bought a new account for DAoC and this looks incredibly tempting. I may end up getting it because I was going to play DAoC with a friend but he pretty much stopped playing now. And ohh yes the ninjas look bad a**.
EDIT:
How are archer classes in this game?? Do they have buy/make all their arrows? One thing I did like about ShadowBane was that there were no arrows to buy for archers. I remembered when I played a ranger in DAoC and I spen most of my cash on arrows, which blew.
EDIT 2:
Sorry, one more edit to this post though. If anyone wants a few guides for this game go here --> http://ffxi.crgaming.com/
They give you and idea of the jobs and advanced jobs available as well as traits/abilities each has.

Rangers are the best non magic damage dealers in the game, but at the cost of money. They're masters of both archery and guns (yes there's guns in FFXI ), but each bullets and arrows cost gils. Good thing is you can learn how to make them yourself to save money, a good alternative is picking up the Thief class before you get to ranger so that you build a good bank account and then have thief as a subjob to ranger to steal gils.

What about monks?? How is the damage for them? They seem like a fun class.

They're probably the 3rd best non magic damage dealers in the game after ranger and dark knight. Monks are not as good as pure damage dealing as the other 2 class but they have insanely high HP, really good abilities and stat altering aswell as some amazing weapon skills when they use hand to hand. They make very fast attacks, especially with their special 2 hours ability hundred fists. They also have an ability at lvl 35 called chakara which regenerates some HP instantly. They're also the only job as far as i know that can have an additional attack with kicking. 2 very fast attacks with the hands, additional attack with kicking at higher levels, highest HP in the game, lots of abilities to increase attack rate and maximum hp, also counter attack and evasion abilities, aswell as healing or doing energy attacks.
Very good job
Their AF armor also looks quite cool

Yes, Square will implement PvP zones and tied to the conquest mode in a month.

The only thing that sucks about that is the fact that the people from Japan will have a huge advantage due to it being out there for a while now... Hey how do find out what server you're on after you've connected.

Yea but its not as bad as you might think, japanese players have a 13 hours difference with the east coast, when you'll be playing they'll be sleeping, the majority at least, there's always going to be hardcore players who spend ~18 hours a day playing the game.
Its life, when PS2 players will join in, PC players will be farther. It doesnt stop them from playing with eachothers though since there's no character level, just job levels, if they decide to change job, they fall back to lvl 1 unless they switch back. Yea, japanese players will have the advantage in pvp for a while, but it also depends on how square implements pvp, maybe there will be zones for level ranges so you dont end up against a lvl 70 when you're lvl 5 ..

When you first connect, it has some purple text showing the server name and a message. The name is in that purple text. I used to hate reading info on this game, since it was going to be MMO, but I just bought it tonight, and It is a really good game. IMO, if you are an FF fan, its a must.
