It depends what you want it for and how much money you have. For general OS tasks like web browsing, word processing, and other office tasks, it makes no sense to upgrade. However, for 3D applications (like games), development (like compiling software), and crunching large amounts of data, then an upgrade would noticably improve performance.

no way just overclock your cpu. also he has a 9800 pro so hes probably an extreme gamer. He does need a faster cpu, not that his is too slow, but that such a fast card is badly bottlenecked anyway. Seek an a64 asap, perhaps for xmas youd gain big in games and 3dmark, like 25k+ marks

Why waste money on a whole new motherboard, and CPU when all he really has to do is change the CPU.

Athlon 64 requires a new motherboard, possibly new ram, and the time and effort it takes to swap out all the hardware, and even perhaps reinstall the OS. A64s are cheap, but I don't think they are that cheap.

If you can sell the 2.53 for a good price the 3.06 would give you a noticable gain. Otherwise I'd wait for something in the 3.6Mhz range.

i love my mb and the rdram.. just think a $200 upgrade isnt that bad was wondering if there would be a extreme difference then I can have a 2.53 server

Didn't see anything there about him wanting a higher 3DMark score. Gaming is different than benchmarking, T-Bird. Also, not everyone overclocks.
To answer the question though, if you can sell you current P4 for a decent price then I say "why not" if you have the money. I myself, would rather put it towards the next big thing. I don't think the performance gain would be worth the money.

3Dmark really has nothing to do with this i run everything in 1600x1200 without a hitch.. just wondering editing with the ht support would be a big improvment, and the 3.06 533 fsb is max I can go. And really the $ isnt a big issue. And when the 800fsb cpus come down in price I will rebuild. I already run a AMD setup and I dont plan on buying a A64 for the point of 3dmaks..also do you think the 2.53 is holding back th 9800 pro would there be an improvment?

Hyperthreading alone is worth the extra $150 and the extra 533mhz should be noticable aswell.
