Rather than call somebody stupid for their choice of hardware, why don't you focus on your own machine.
You're right, it is all about choices, but wow - its been like 5 years since we've seen a consumer chip for $1000.
How much do you guys think the release of the EE will drop the prices of other intel chips by, if any?
Since the EE is so far above the other chips, it probably won't impact the pricing of the other chips at all.
From what I best understand, a paper launch is where a company release the specifications and benchmark comparisons (where applicable) of the completed product (and even send some to review sites) , yet the product won't be avaliable to buy for a good while (say a couple of months).
There is a little more to it than that. Typically, when you "launch" "introduce" or "release" a product, that means it is on sale, in stores NOW. A paper launch comes in two levels - either a launch with extremely limited quantities or a launch that isn't really a launch at all (no products on sale at all) - more of an "introduction" or "announcement." An "introduction" is something often done at Comdex and happens many months (even a year) before a launch. Sometimes its tough to tell which you are dealing with though. The P3 1ghz for example was paper launched a week or two after the Athlon 1gh due to the 1ghz race, was actually available for sale a few weeks later, but took several months before Intel was even shipping it in reasonable quantities or to anyone besides Dell. Check press releases for these words. Example: P4 EE
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov 3, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Intel Corporation today introduced the Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor Extreme Edition supporting Hyper-Threading (HT) Technology** at 3.20 GHz. High-performance computers based on this new processor are designed for high-end gamers and computing enthusiasts and are now available from system manufacturers worldwide.
The P4EE is a sweet chip And no its not a paper launch as some AMD fanatics would like to think.. Since I was able to order a complete setup with a 3.2EE about 2 months ago now
Now, I wouldn't call it a paper launch either, but for a different reason. I remember the links you posted a month or so ago, but I never heard of anyone acutally buying one. I certainly can't prove it (neither can you of course) but I suspect if you ordered one a month ago, it wouldn't have shipped until today. According to Intel, the launch is today and it is on sale today. Call it a disguised pre-order by an unscrupulous oem. So it wasn't paper launched 2 months ago because it wasn't launched until today.

I do not mind spending a good amount of money on something that lasts a while. If I had it I would not think twice about paying $1000 or more for a good monitor (wait I did) or maybe printer. Not for a processor though. I would rather pay $300 for a processor and upgrade it every 6 months. In that amount of time the $1000 processor would perform like crap compared to what you then have. It is easier to go 5 or so years on a monitor.

Paying $1000 for a cpu with at most a 15% performance gain on a good day , is the height of Stupidty. The P4EE is a repacked Xeon chip, which is still beaten by the equiv AMD chip which is also a lot cheaper!!!
They want you to pay a premium for something that is outclassed even before its released!!
Ah never has the phrase "A fool and his money are soon parted" been more appropriate, intel must be laughing their arses off.

Outclassed? Please....

I can't belive Intel did this...
THIS IS BASICALLY A SECOND PAPER LAUNCH. Where is the EE, it has been a few days and I still don't see them at retail. God they make me sick, this is just an effort to keep interest alive while they struggle over the next few weeks to get a tiny shipment out.
Intel cannot sell this thing. It will kill them. The monopoly costs and opportunity costs are way too high. There is no reason to sell this for $1000 when they could sell it as a Xeon for $2500. Not to mention that the feds may have an issue with a monopoly selling a product at about a 50x profit ratio - not even MS could get away with that.

A cant realy say that the EE is bad at all even when compared to tha A64. Expensive Yes.
It depends waht you will use it for...
The EE is faster in most cases like Video Encoding stuff.
The A64 is faster in most cases where most of us use PC's for...Office Work and Games.

Umm, yeah. How long will it take to get that thing. Dell will often advertise products well before they actually have them on hand. I am still waiting for them to 'build' five top of the line laptops. I put the order in almost two months ago, the holdup - "sorry, we the parts have not yet become available". My questionw was, "so why the hell are you selling them". Response, "because we can, and people will wait as long as they have to".
Also I said, in retail channels. The real benchmark for availability.
Until they are 'out' and 'for sale' everywhere, it is just a second paper launch. Good job Intel, you made yourselves look like idiots twice, with the same product.

Only thing good about this cpu is that maybe intel will release a presscott ee one day. 1meg l2 cache 2meg l3 cache now that could be a good chip. And then a few months later i will pick one up for 200 bucks
