I may be wrong, but I think it has the same core as the Barton, but with half the L2 cache. Edit to add: seeing as they are at 266fsb and if they come unlocked they might be good overclockers.

Yeah supposedly it's a Barton with half the L2 cache dissabled. There is a mod that will enable the extra 256K of the L2 cache too, so you get a Barton at a great price, I would like to get my hands on one and see if the mod works.

is it a software or hardware mod? ie: do you have to connect the bridges, etc.

It's a hardware mod. I believe it involved connecting the bridges. The L12 or the L2 not sure which.

From what I have read though, the mod does not always work. That is sometimes the reason that they were not binned as bartons in the first place.

but its worth a try isn't it? cuz that extra L2 cache can help preformance..

Instead of modding just spend another $10 to get a true Barton. It is not like it is that good of a deal. It is just a way for AMD to streamline production around one core, economies of scale will make it cheaper.

Don't bartons run at 333 FSB though and start at 2500+ ?
    Isn't a 2400+ a Tbred "B" and a Thorton 266 FSB 2400+ with 256 kb cache identical to the Tbred?

No, from what I have read it has the Barton core with only half the cache enabled and also they set the fsb at 266, some places say it is somewhere inbetween a T-Bred and a Barton.

here's the way i see it...the thorton chips have the same physical core size as a barton, but only half the cache is enabled, thus making it comparable to a t-bred. if you do the mod and it works, great, extra cache for free...if you do the mod and it doesn't work you basically have a t-bred with an extra chunk of useless silicon wafer sitting there, unless the extra surface area of it helps to disipate heat better, which again may help in overclocking...
