Hammerhead Shark
Sharky's own community game server?
I have already discussed this with Mr. Catalyst and he said it would be fine, as long as we dont cross the thin line!
My proposition:
Anyone who wants to, can donate parts (decent ones) to make a Sharky game server. The game will be decided upon by the people who donate parts, and those who do donate parts will get admin to the server (a higher level of admin depending on how much you donate)
I saw a similar concept setup over at Anandtech forums and so i thought why not try something like that at Sharky
If anyone is interested in doing this, please let me know and we can setup someone who will receive all of the parts (a trustworthy person, perhaps a mod) and if someone would like to host this (if they have a college connection or a fast upload rate). If someone cannot host this, perhaps we can have it setup somewhere with a nice connection (perhaps someone has some ideas).
The way the system would work is everyone who has spare parts, or wants to toss in something nice will be able to and we can keep a list of what we still need. Once the computer is complete, the people who donated will all have a discussion on what game, or games they want on the server (perhaps we can run 2 games? depending on the computer and connection), they will then be given admin to the server and we are allowed to name is Sharkyforums.com Community Server, just as long as we make it clear that it is being run by the community. [Correct me if i am wrong on anything of this, Cat].
Is anyone up for something like this? Think its bad? or Good? Got any suggestions as to another idea?
Since we are a community of computer and game enthusiasts, i figured that many people will be up for this or something similar to it - let me know what you think.
edit:
WE HAVE THE FOLLOWING SERVER UP AND RUNNING:
SharkyForums 1.6 Counter-Strike Server
216.231.184.30:27015
get in there and play everyone!

depending on what you're looking to run.. i have a spare p3 1ghz that i was gunna sell on ebay, but somethin like that would make a decent dedicated. i also have a mobo + retail hsf for it but i'm not sure if the mobo works or not because it's been sitting out for a month or so w/out a static bag cuz i have none

that sounds like an awsome start - seems that this might turn out better than i thought it would
but before we start to put together any computer or anything, we need to make sure that we have an internet connection that is up 24/7 and can support many players (depending on the game)
Just to make sure, Deathbunny, these parts are being donated, as in, i dont believe anyone will be paying money for them....so if you need money for them, then sell them on ebay

I remember a thread a while back about this. no one could decide on which game to play.
Hardest part is finding someone with a high speed connection.
I can donate a Compaq server dual NIC.
Also who do you trust with the server? Someone says hey I got a T3 line, I can host it for you. Then they take our server and run.

thats why i was thinking a mod, if they had some connections to a nice server storage facility or if a mod had a nice connection, i think they would be most trustworthy (not to say that other people arnt, but mods are most well known)

Sounds like a good idea to me, as long as it's not CS
If I had any spare parts (worth donating) I'd give them up. Unfortunately the only spare parts i have lying around are an old Dual Pentium Pro 200Mhz server (and I dont think that's going to run much of anything )

Mr Zurkon is here to kill
I could donate 2 256mb sticks of crucial pc-2100...the problem I see other than the obvious trust issue and the bandwidth is what game would it host? I mean some would want dc...others would want cs...some would want something else...maybe like rotate a new game each month?

the only problem with rotating games is we would need legal copies of all of those
depending on the connection we get, we can run 2 or 3 games
Catalyst was running 3 or 4 games on one server.....the only catch is that he had an amazing connection
if we can get that connection, then we might be able to run CS and BF1942 and Halo or something like that
if not, some people may have to compromise and we can use the game that gets the most votes or support by the people who donated

i will contact ua549 regarding a place to host this server
i dont know about Call of Duty, like i said, everyone who donates will decide upon 1 or a few games to run (again, depending on components and connection)

alright, ua549 no longer does networking work and does not have any connections
so we are still looking for someone who can host this? maybe someone who works for an ISP, or maybe an ISP who would like to sponsor?
toss out some ideas everyone

Heh, the only real thing I could donate would probably be something like spare parts here and there. I've got a stick of RAM or whatever here and there.
If I wasn't still stuck in High School, then I'd possibly be able to dish out the bandwith - I've got an OO connection that's got a b1tchin' bandwith behind it (three DSLReports tests spat out around ~2400/870), and I don't really strain it too much... If at all. But if that's enough, I really don't know.

Well, if worse comes to worse, i can always throw a system on the college T3 or something. I just don't think you'll connect great unless you are on the east coast, tho.
If I had a decent connection out of my house, i'd be more than happy to host a server, because frankly, i'm bored out of my mind.
However, my cable is fairly whacked (2meg down, and 30k up..), so until it gets checked out, i doubt i'll be playing any games.
