    Question Amd 2500+ & Nfs7-s

Would it be still possible to overclock a locked AMD Athlon XP2500+ to 3200+? I understand that AMD has locked the CPU multiplier at 11 after calendar week 39 this year. Is it still possible to change the FSB and raise the clock speed this way?

    Example:
If the multiplier stays locked at 11 with FSB @ 166 (11*166=1826=XP2500+) would it work out to set the FSB to 200 (11*200=2200=XP3200+)?

Can somebody give me a hint?

I was going to buy a Abit NF7-S mobo with a Barton 2500+ yesterday before I read about the new locking business. Now I’m wondering what to do.

    Cheers,
    Ingo

yes, you can still overclock it, and your math is correct, assuming the chip you get is capable of overclocking to that speed, which it easily should be able to.

    Great Question!

I was thinking about exactly the same setup. However, would an absolute build your own and OC newbie be able to do that without much risk or trouble? What about additional fans/etc to keep the temperatures down?

Probably not a fair comparison, but how would a moderately O/Ced setup like above compare to a stock Intel 2.6C or 2.4C? Would a 2800+ compare better? With how much O/Cing or would a 2500 be better to OC? Decisions, Decisions.

It should work fine provided you get a decent chip and use pc3200 memory. I bought some cheap pc2700 memory and was not able to get
11 x 200. I sold that memory and bought pc3200. Right now I am running 11.5 x 200 stable but have an older barton 2500 to be able to change the multi.

    Good luck,

    Kevin

I was thinking of getting PC3200 sticks. Any problems with Twinmos?

I recently purchased an abit nf7-s with a barton 2500+ using corsair 3200 low latency twinmos. You dont even have to go into user define in the bios there are three boxes which you can check, user define, 2500+ or 3200+. The 3200+ automatically sets it up at 11 by 200.

will you need to buy a better HSF to OC it to 3200+ speeds?

I’m going to use a Zalman CNPS6000Cu Flower and purchased for a friend (who’s going to have the same setup) a EKL Blade XP Papst cooler. Both HSFs are rated for 3200+ CPUs and supposed to be very silent.

I’ll let you know which one was more effective (and quieter).

    Just to catch up.

I have been running the Barton 2500+ @2200MHz (3200+) for a couple of months now. No problems at all. After I installed the RAM (Twinmos 3200) the NF7-S automatically set the FSB to 200 (200x11=2200=Barton 3200+).

I had to replaced a couple of fans to get the noise level down to a minimum. I started off with a Zalman CNPS6000Cu Flower CPU cooler which runs extremely silent. Then I swapped the Northbridge fan of the NF7-S with a passive heatsink from Zalman (ZM-NB47). After this I got rid of the nVidia Geforce Ti500 fan and replaced it with another passive heatsink from Zalman (ZM17-CU).

Lastly I built in a very quiet Barracuda 7200.7 (80GB). It’s might not be the fastest hard disk around but for sure is much quieter than my old Maxtor DiamondMax Plus.

I use a Q-Tec 400W low noise PSU which is very silent but develops quite a lot of heat. I think I’m going to get rid off it soon. Any suggestions?

    Cheers,
    Ingo

Twinmos is very good. If you buy some PC3200 there is still a chance it could be BH-5, though that's probably not really important to you.
