How big is too big?

I've been swinging between a Dell 8600 and a Fujitsu Lifebook P5020. Quite a difference I know, but this is why: How big is the 8600 really? Since I can go to a store and pick up a dell I really dont know how portable it is. I like it cause I can get a 9600 pro, 40 gigs and that great widescreen for about 1700 bucks. On the other hand the svelt 5020 has a widescreen, 40 gigs, 6.5 hrs battery life and I can take it absolutely everywhere i go cause it only weighs like 3 pounds. I know I know ur saying well which do you want? Weight or absolute power? Well if dragging around the Dell isnt that bad I'd probably get it, but something tells me that having an ultra portable might be more handy, specially since I have a blazingly fast and capable desktop. Someone knock some sense into me, give me facts, opionions, slants, slurs whatever!

I would look into the Life book that has the 10.4 Widescreen and on dual battrey setup gets around 11 hours. But you need to think what ya want to use it for. I go to many lans and thus I use my laptop, this why I have the balance of power and portabilty.

Dude, you have a powerful desktop already, go for portability.

It's not like you are going to play kick arse Dx9 games on the go.
You probably won't even have a mouse to play it with, or even the surface to put it on.

I have a hard time carrying around my 8200 already

What kind of gaming capabilites do you think it will have, I know not great but I would like to play a little on the road

ummm Intel Extreme G2 will play like WC3, Q3, UT, CS, games of that nature. Mabey BF1942 will lots of details really low, but any new games are out of the question, but don't for get about emulation

I was gonna recomend that same laptop to my GF just so I could play with it, but she bought a Emachine, but what can you do

I went with the Fujitsu P5020D, 1 GHz ULV pro, 512MB Mushkin ram, 40GB hard drive, Intel Extreme Graphics (crap but I definately better than I expected). First let me tell you about the size, HOLY CRAP this thing is so small and so lite, its awesome! I can take this thing anywhere at 3.5 pounds. Its screen is a 10.4 in widescreen but with a resolution of 1280x768 so I can have a webpage open next to word or photoshop and its super clear and bright. Its got the best keyboard I've ever seen on a laptop, SD, CF, Sony Memstick slots, G wifi, PC card, ethernet, modem, 2 usb 2.0, VGA and super video out, Firewire and upgrading the HD or Mem is a breeze. Its not the fastest kid on the block but I saw on TechTV that it was actually faster than IBMs 1.3M which says a lot. And with a 3.6 GHz desktop I dont need crunching power. To be honest, I've never been so happy parting with 1600 bucks, to anyone looking for an ultra portable computer, look no further this is your promised land. If anyone has questions or wants pics just ask, I cant convey my happiness with fujitsu's job on thos laptop, kudos.

Before you looked into this one, did you look at the Toshiba R100?
Heard that's light and thin as hell.

But sounds like yours is crazy... all those functions in such a small package.

I did actually look at it and it was the one I was going to buy until I got to play with it, dont know if it was just the guys or if they are all like that but it felt like it was cheap, you know that feeling you get when you pick up something and you just know it was put together well, i didn't get that feeling. Also the clackity clack on the keyboard was too lose, I can't stand a bad keyboard, especially since thats what you are interfacing with all day, looked like a good package just a little off for me, JMHO

i got a dell 5150 in august it is like 7.1 lbs i have NO trouble taking notes on it in class or carrying it around campus. Main reason i got this was bc of its power. 3.06ghz ATI9000 64mb ram and 512mb ram. I get 3-4 hours of typing time easy. I tested it doing nothing but typing on it and it lasted 4:23 min aprox. I normally dont get that bc i HAVE to have my tunes going :P. Only down side i see with it is it dont have many ports. No printer port or serial output thingy. It does have USB :P. So to answer your question. Weight and power vs portability. If you are carring the laptop on your arm typing on it get the portable one if you just want to travel with a decent PC for lanning or stuff like that get the power.

I have the Inspiron 8600 and it's around the same weight as yours. I thought it was gonna be more of a struggle, but I found it no trouble at all. I think because it's so wide it kind of spreads the weight out abit, compared to my mom's old 14". If I had a kickass desktop I'd still get an ultraportable, though.

However....it will not play Simpsons H&R, Americas Army..ect very well. I get about 10-15 FPS in SHR & AA(graphics intensive parts of games) bogs down and is not playable.
