If there's no free 512MB memory upgrade...

I figured if Dell is not offering a free upgrade, go with the 1 DIMM 256MB, go to Newegg and buy a 512MB for less than $100, and you have 768MB for the price of 512MB .

Edit: Or if you're cheap save $50 and get a 256MB stick.

    Will this void the warranty?

When you are going to send the laptop for fixing, just take out the extra RAM.

You can only use Dell's VC AFAIK.

I wish they had 2 spare bays so we could have 2 HDs and 1 DVDRW, or 1 HD, a battery, and a DVDRW.

The battery isn't in a modular bay unless you get a spare. Same with the HD, I had two (a little 6gb backup) with a HD Caddy in my modular bay. Right now my 8100 has a DVD, HD, battery, and CDRW...

I dunno about the new models, but I think they are similiar.

Yeah There ARE laptops like that but mostly ones with desktop P4's I've configured such a one (for fun) which had 4 HDD's but now optical drive But you could make it have 3 HDD's and a DVD burner And others with 2 batteries and an optical drive but they aren't as nic elooking or as think or as low priced or have the best cpu's or battery life or...you get the picture.

Unfortunately there's only 1 spare bay in the 8600's. So you can have 1 HD, 1 DVDRW, and that's it. Obviously the primary battery but no spare one. If you wanted another HD you'd have to get external, or take out the DVDRW.

Yeah, I know that sux, so why buy a spare battery? I guess so you can swap it when the othe rone dies? better than nothing. Those desktop replacemnt one shave a lot of bays cause they need 2 batteries to have over 30min. of battery oife

Yea I'd just buy a second one if I wanted and put it in when the primary one ran out. It's also got more power than the one in the bay I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong.

You can actually tell the computer to go into sleep mode and switch the batteries that way (no need to shut the computer off completely) Once I had it accidentally in sleep mode and had removed the battery. I replaced it soon after (30seconds or so) and it still loaded from sleep mode.

If I installed the RAM and wanted to return it before the 30 days are up and they somehow found out, would they refuse the refund?

Edit: Say I delivered a static discharge to the memory slot

Well, then you're probably screwed, but then again how will they know that you're the reaosn the DIMM isn't working? It could have been shipped that way

I got a second battery for a free upgrade - can't use it and the optical drive at the same time. Nobody's perfect.
