    Post Techie-Wannabe!

    Hello.

I always was familiar with computer stuff, mainly gaming. But now I realize that how little I know in terms on actual techinical stuff concerning computers...

How do you experts learn all these stuff? I am sure much comes from exprience, but you guys follow the recent stuff through some sort of media, I guess.

Which sites(other than sharkyextreme, of course)are helpful? Should I subscribe to some magazines perhaps? then, which ones? Is there anything else you might recommend?

Heh, yes, I AM a techie-wannabe... and hopefully real techies will help me... ^_^

    Search and you will find!

Magazines some people will like might not appeal to you. Look through them all in newsagents and buy a few you like till you find the ones that interest you.

Whatever it was that got you knowledgeable about games will do the same for you in hardware.

You'll automatically wind up with the level of knowledge that you want.

well i myself thought i knew a lot about computers as little as 6 months ago, but then i decided to build a computer for a school project. I then realized like you have that i didnt know as much about computers as i thought i did. The way i found out and learned a lot was just collecting info from as many sites as possible.
    *this is no free plug*
I have found in my opinion that sharky does provide some of the best info on computers around. Although this is true, they do have their opinions, and it is nice to try other sites sometimes for a different point of view on some products.

I have also found that www.hardware anylasis.com also supplies sufficient info concerning computers and such. Like rob said it is really up to you and how much you want to learn and what subjects you would like to learn about. Good luck and keep reading.

Another option besides reading Maximum PC which I highly recommend also, is going to school for an A+ certification which I'm currently doing right now.

Not only will you learn a lot but your forced to do the boring stuff and get real hands on training, plus there will always be people in the class more advanced than yourself who are always happy to show off and help you out.

At the very least you'll be able to build and trouble shoot your own system and if you decide to take the tests you'll be certified to do PC repair.

    Have Fun, Rodney

Why do the signs that say "Slow Children" have a picture of a running child?

Yeah, I wish I coulda gotten into computer stuff earlier... I am a high school senior and only thing techinical I have done is building the comp I am using right now. Other then that, only thing I know is use basic apps and play a mean game of Counterstrike. ^_^ I am seriously thinking about going into computer stuff as college major and job, but I realize there are so many techwiz who are in my age but knows hella more than I do. I guess I will look into Maximun PC and A++ ... Thanks guys.

Btw... which certificate(s) is most useful/will be useful in near future to get a decent paying job and possible advance? I wanna focus on hardware stuff if possible and I like basically anything with computers.

    Thanks for the helps again.

As what these other people have been saying, a subscription to MaximumPC will be worth the world over. I've learned 3/4 of my PC knowledge from them only.

They do some crazy stuff there. They even had an article about pulling PC pranks on other people. And they also dismembered a G4 cube and used it for other purposes (like a tissue dispenser or other better purposes)

    ------------------
The PC that would maybe beat an egg

    Proc: AMD K6-2 350@400Mhz
    Mobo: VIA VA503+
    RAM: 196MB PC100 - 1 64MB and 1 128MB
    HD: 13GB Western Digital
    Video: Radeon 64MB DDR
Sound: Sound Blaster Live! Platinum 5.1
CD-ROM/CD-RW: TDK 12/10/32 (and I use it for reading too *bleah*)
    Pointing Device: MS Intellimouse Optical

And I'm surprised that it can run Quake 3 at 30-so FPS in 640x480 *cough*
