Unhappy no 80 conductor cable installed?

Everytime my computer boots up while it checks for IDE drives, the "Secondary IDE Channel no 80 conductor cable installed" message always pops up. I've replaced the cable with 3 different cables I've found and still get the same results. I have the cd-rw as master and dvd-rom as slave but I noticed hooking up the cd-rw drive by itself stops the message from appearing and when I hook up the dvd-rom it comes back. What can I do to fix this? Everything seems to be working fine even with the message.

Are you actually using an 80 wire IDE cable on the secondary IDE(ie ATA(66/100) cable or a 40 wire one (ATA33)?
It sounds as if your DVD may be ATA66 and you are using a 40 wire cable.

The highest rated speed for a 40-pin conductor is ATA33 not 66

It is possible the drive is too old and confussing the controller.. Try swapping master/slave assignments...

Your DVD drive may be capable of better than UDMA-2(ATA33), requiring an 80 con cable. Some newer drives show up as UDMA-4(ATA66) or -5(ATA100) devices. (Not that they actually go that fast). Also, you know the blue goes to the board, black (farthest away) to the master, and white/beige (middle) to the slave. Either of those reasons could give you that message.

Thank you for all your help! I'll look into getting a 80 pin cable. I had no idea there were different kinds of ribbon cables.

Ok I have another question too. I just downloaded mbm5 and I get 54C for my cpu and 33C for case. Is this bad? I hear you guys talking about keeping your cpu under 55C and sometimes it goes up all the way to 70C. I've been using the same stock fan for years without a problem but I'm getting a new one soon.

Your temps are a bit high- can you take the Heatsink fan off and take a look at the heatsink- I suspect it could do with a clean.

Ok new fans fixed temp problems (49C CPU, 30C Case) and I can now oc but the new udma/133 80 conductor cable didn't help. I'll still get the message any suggestions?

    set it up this way

    Pri master>OS hard drive
    Pri slave>DVD
    Sec master>Sony Burner
    Sec slave>2nd hard drive.

that should do it for you, just make sure the jumpers are right after the change. and make sure you have all 80 pin ata100/133 ribbons, like mentioned before.

you can switch the sec mas and sec slv around if you so desire.

this really helps with making CD copies "on the fly", sometimes when on the same ribbon, problems occur.

    hope this helps.

Why would you want the 2nd HD be on the second channel as a slave? instead of a master?

With the set up I have in the tower right now thats just not possible. Either the label on the new ribbon cable I got was wrong or the DVD-Rom has a problem.

Lite-x2x- How are your drives reported in Control panel\system\harware devices\IDE atapi\IDE primary or secondary\Advanced- It should say what UDMA mode they are in?

I don't see UDMA mode anywhere. Its reported as "ATAPI DVD-Rom 16x" and it says its working properly.

I don't see an advanced option, only properties. But I found out from Intel App Accelerator that its transfer mode is UDMA-2 and it recognizes the cable only as a 40 pin instead of an 80 pin.
