    Why would you want the 2nd HD be on the second channel as a slave? instead of a master?

    reread my original post, i do believe i said something to the effect that they could be switched around, i just gave my preference, being doing it this way for years without problems. i prefer the burner in the master slot, a personal preference, and having the other HD as slave or master on the secondary IDE shouldn't make a spit of difference for speed of access.

    just wondering if you some insight on the Master/Slave thing.

    Think I would try a couple of things.
    1. Try the DVD as master on the secondary IDE and the CDR as slave.
    2. Try the DVD as master on the secondary IDE with the CDR removed.
    3. Try the DVD as slave on the primary IDE .
    See if the above combos still give the error and check the UDMA status.
    Sometimes two ATAPI devices on the same IDE channel do not behave with each other.

    rereading he post wouldn't have solved his question.... His question was as to 'why' you choose that preference, which you answered in your 2nd post...

    Not an insight... But a matter of preference as well...

    I was just curious as to why you had picked that arrangement...
