Far Cry SS - NO 56K - Test your IQ Knowledge

Well, there has been a lot of talk about this Far Cry demo.

I took some screen shots using Fraps using three different setups.

I remember a much publicized screenshot of this demo showing a pipe looking horrible when PS 2.0 shaders were not used.

Also, there has been some discussion about teh different ways nV and ATi utilize AA.

Which is which, can you tell?

So, if they aren't labeled by a reviewer, are you really able to tell teh minute differences?

If you are, HOORAY!

I'm just curious to see if some of you are just review warriors.

PS - I'll tell you my FPS later, as that has little to do with IQ. I will tell you as far as a brand new DX9 game goes, it was pretty playable in all those ss.

It doesn't look like the third setup has any AA... Should we just guess cards out of the blue or can you tell us which three cards you are using???? For me it's impossible to say if it is say a 5700Ultra or a 5950Ultra.... Would be easier to guess if we knew which three cards or should we just say which setup is ATi and which is nVidia?

I never understood the logic behind a game like that and have such ugly looking trees, bushes, plants...

Those leaves are terrible

I believe you're 9800XT, 5950U and what else? The 5700U? The last set looks particularly bad - the gunsight near the barrel of the gun looks quite jagged. I won't be surprised at all if this turns out to be the XT coz AA/AF doesn't seem to work when I was running it with my 9800Pro. It may work for the nV cards coz it's a 'Meant to be played' title IIRC. You should include pics of the rusted pipes as your torch hits it in the fortress, it'd be interesting to see if the diff is all it's made out to be.

they do but it looks like foliage or whatever isn't enabled...in that part I remember being up to my waist in plants...

as for aa...pictures do not help when telling the difference...when it's in motion and the pixels are constantly changing then you can see it...

You can't see the aliasing in the 3rd set??

Other than that, the 3 look pretty similar with a quick glance

Third setup dosent appear to have AA, and looks as though you've set the Texture quality to performance (everything looks blurred, the trees, the buildings, the rocks, etc). Seems to look worse compared to the other two.

You can't really compare the quality as you haven't setup a way to compare them. None of the screenshots are in the same place, so it's hard to pass any kind of judgement on them.

Nah, some of them are teh same shot, especially the intro scene in the boat.

They are all 1024x768x32 - all medium settings.

That's the rez I play at, so yeah.

Well you guys are right, the last set isn't using any AA, just 8x AF.

Any guesses on what cards?

If you can't spot differences because the screen shots are at different places...well, that just proves that there is no discernible difference in IQ.

I can't tell which is which, but if I had my guess, I'd say the top is an Nv, middle is a Radeon and bottom is another Nv.

If they aren't the same screenshot then it's all a matter of opinion. If you have the same angle, same place, etc then you can say for certain card A has noticeably better IQ then card B, or vice versa. Just because a rock happens to be in one screenshot and another rock happens to be in different screenshot doesn't mean you should use the two as a baseline for comparission. hell even the same rock at a different angle can make one card look superior to the other.

You can use various screenshots to compare large differnces in IQ; like missing textures, poor rendering, etc. It really is better if you have the exact same screenshot though, that way there can be no question as to whether it's the cards rendering abilities, or just a change in angle making one card look better
