I guess this topic fits well in this section...

I live in the GTA(Greater Toronto Area) and will have to go to the university in 2 years...

Can someone please recommend a good university. I was thinking of going to either University of Toronto Mississauga campus bacause it is very close to me, or Ryerson. The program that I wana take is Computer Science. I wana study programming.

Can someone comment on that, is it a good idea to go to one of those universities? which one is better? Is the program that I wana take good? Any other comments?..

i live in mississauga and i chose UW 6 yrs ago (damn i m old), by far it is the best school in Computer Science / Enginnering / Mathematics in Canada !

Now everyone of my yr of entrance have graduated, I am just going to use an analogy and let you figure out the rest.

Before going to University, we are on a small island A. Getting on a university is like gettin on a boat, which will bring us back the Island B, a place we want (getting a job)!

No matter which boat you choose, it is going to be fun, enjoy the sun, and have some fun. However, most boat, in average, including one labeled "UTM", dont hve enough gas to get you to Island B, so you expect to either swim for awhile when the boat's gas ran out, or paddle hard while ur on the boat.

Year 2003 was pretty bad year bcoz there was a thunderstorm. Can't stay on the boat (no gas), can't go down to swim, and not reached the island yet.

Only one boat, in average, will get you to Island B before the gas ran out, and I will stop advertising here

university of waterloo..... its too expensive and requires very high marks. I won't be able to live at home...

Do you know if its easy to find a job as a programmer after finishing a university like ryerson? and what kind of "extra swimming" am I gona have to do after graduation?

its hard to say what those paddling are if you arent at this stage yet. Just work hard at school and enjoy your way thru... I know ComSci from Ryerson is tough too..!

BTW, if money is any problem at all, just ask the government for it

i recommend you apply to carleton university in ottawa. Faculty of computer science is one of its best and perfect facultys. There are many students who come from toronto and many other places just to study there.

I would recommend University of Waterloo, it's a good comprehensive program.

Currently heading into 4th year there in Computer Science. The co-op program is excellent, with many companies actively seeking Waterloo co-op students.

If money is an issue, then look into getting OSAP assistance / scholarships.

The marks required to get into Comp Sci aren't THAT high, compared to Computer Engineering in Waterloo.

However, the program gets quite difficult fairly early, by your 2nd term here.

All in all, I still recommend it.

computer science just requires your ability to think logically (binary search ) and at least some interest in the subject ...

computer engineering requires a whole bunch more interest, the same thinking logically thing AND very healthy interest in physics

Also make sure you know and understand the difference between "Computer SCIENCE" and Programming, although similar they are totally different curriculum

As for a University, Toronto is definitely one of the top, along with Waterloo, Queens and Ottawa (Ontario wise anyway).

Finally CompSci is a tough field, you better enjoy computers and at least somewhat enjoy math b/c there is lots of it, as for the job market, well it aint great right now but it is looking better

Yeah, COMPSCI is alot harder than Information Technology. I'm taking a CPSC course this semester as a bridging course and I hate it. Math + Computers = Eeep!
