DDR Ram

Today someone told me about DDR Ram and this link http://www.crucial.com/ddr/order.asp . I am just wondering if this is compatible with the AMD Thunderbirds and if any mobo's are coming out to support it any time soon. That ram seems pretty cheap and really fast.

There are currently no motherboards that a end user can buy, but you can currently by systems that run off of DDR. You should start seeing DDR boards by the end of this year or the beginning of the next.

You can buy a DDR system from Crucial's parent company, Micron at www.micron.com. I'd wait a couple of months because alot of new stuff will be in the marketplace in late January. DDR prices will be lower and the 256 meg DDR will be hitting the market.

Currently I think there might be one or two models of DDR mainboard out there you might beable to get if you are really lucky.

As for DDR being compatible with current T-birds the answer is yes and no. PC1600 memory (DDR 100 ~ 200Mhz) will be compatible with the exsisting T-birds running on the double pumped 100Mhz. bus (usually referred to as the 200Mhz. bus). There is another type of DDR memory called PC2100 (DDR 133 ~ 266Mhz) that will require double pumped 133Mhz. T-birds (referred to as the 266Mhz. bus T-birds). These processors, and the memory, really won't be widely availible till sometime early next year.

Unless you have a ddr mobo in hand I'd wait for the pricing to come down on ddr ram, which it surely will over the next few weeks. No sense getting ram when you have nothing to put it in.

Am I reading that right? PC2100? The mobos, when they come out, will have a 2100Mhz fsb?

No, 133MHz DDR for 266MHz effective. I think the 2100 has to do with bandwidth.

If you have connected the L1 bridges on your t-bird, you could adjust the multiplier and run it on a 266MHz bus

Nope. Far from it. PC2100 is just double-pumped PC133 memory (Effectivley 266Mhz). I have no idea where they came up with the 2100 or 1600, but they should be called PC266 and PC200. The CPU's are named that, so why aren't the RAM Chips?
