I had XP on my old Dell Laptop which was a P1 166MMX, 72MB of RAM, 2.1GB HDD. It was a bit slow but it worked just fine for me, even used to play red alert on it.

why don't you invest into some cheapo ram cause 288... that's pretty lame. Get some value ram it'll get the job done well if you're not planing to upgrade any time soon that is.
-
no the 288 is my famly computer thats the main one..i know its out dated its about 3 years old...anyways the computer i wanna use is the 233mhz machine that i got for free from my school with only 128mb of ram i just wanna surf the web, use the audio for my sound system and proble chat with it NO GAMEING that would be stupid. (old video card also)

On that machine I would use Win98. If you must use WinXP, do it with ALL the graphics enhancements turned completely off.

It'll work, trust me. Give it a try. Unless you plan on doing something crazy like video editing it'll run fine. This is experiance talking. On some computers you may need a BIOS update, but it's alot less likely than MS would like you to believe. XP will basically scale itself down.

Oh, no doubt it'll work. My 300A Celeron worked great with XP. It ran like crap at first, then I tweaked services, virtual memory, and startup items and it ran great. I could even leave most of the visual effects on with no trouble. I had 192MB of RAM.
For most people though, XP on a system that speed would run like a dog.

russel what tweaks do u recomend?
-
Hammerhead Shark
duh, the tweaks. i do them automatically now and don't think to mention them. first you want to set your virtual memory to something like 1.5x as much memory as you have. turn off any services you don't use. take all the automatic startup software off and only run when you need them. if you're like me you'll also want to go to classic windows theme, or get rid of themes altogether. there are a few more, but i am sick (strep-throat) as hell today and can't think.
all in all, i just meant if you are dead set on XP, you don't need to sweat, it will work. yes 98se would run pretty quick. i just don't like it anymore, i'm spoiled by the fact that XP just doesn't crash as much. also 2000 would prolly be the best compromise between speed and stability.
