Hammerhead Shark
Abit BH6
Hi, I just got my new comp, a HP 7940 for under $500 brand new.... its p3 1ghz... standard everything(dvd, hd,cdrw).... but its got a built in graphics card! So now I'm thinking of upgrading the CPU in my old PC... its currently p3 600mhz, 256sd ram, geforce 2gts, sb live value all on a ABIT BH6 mobo... (self build in january '99 hehe, upgraded cpu/video since then). And I'm wondering, how high does a ABIT BH6 go as far as supporting CPUs.. I looked on abit site for bios and all... but I'm just wondering what experiences some of you have with p3 cpus... or with that slotkit for the BH6.
I do know best is to build a brand new system (well at elast new case+mobo/cpu in my case)... but there's always the money thing as you know hehe. Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks

the inevitable outcome
THe BH6 is still a great board, even by todays stanadards. If your currently running rev 1.0 then you are limited to an 800mhz pIII or celeron 800mhz using sloket adapter. revision 1.2 allows for upto 900-1ghz I believe.

go to www.powerleap.com and dl their proggie to test your motherboard.
They make a slotket with onboard voltage regulation that allows you to run the new P3 coppermine chips up to 1ghz.

Also 1 more question, if I am to just upgrade the video card in my HP 7940(built in agp).... whats the best PCI card around for about $200 that will carry me through for a little while( Saving my paychecks for a 'lil while... maybe about 6 months to get a whole set of brand new parts for a enw comp)

Here is a link to a VooDoo 5 5500 dual chip PCI card for $135. For PCI- it is the fastest thing going http://www.ocie.com/metacart/product.asp?intProdID=5500
Warning. Driver support is nil. 3dfx is out of business. go to www.voodoofiles.com for driver updates, I did see drivers for XP.
Here is a link to a Geforce 2 MX400 64Meg w/TV-out for $99 http://store.yahoo.com/hoct12/pcivgacards.htm
