I have Abit AV8-3rd EYE and Athlon 64 3500+ WINCHESTER. My cup temps stays 37c-40c most of the time. But when i plug in my 40G usb 2 hard drive, the cpu temperature goes up to 50c. This happens within 30sec after I pulg in the usb hard-drive. Any body know whats going on here.

! That is so strange. Unless it is heavy use of the cpu caused by the drive, but 10 deg? Or maybe it is some glitch in the temp reporting system (wow im shocked, 5 other threads now that revolve around this)?
I dont know, do your temps go up when you do something like watch a dvd or something that makes the cpu turn up? If so (I mean it should a bit) what increase do you see?

No, teamp stays around 37-40c, even whan iam watching dvd or other things. But as soon as i plug in that usb hard-drive, temp shoots up about 8-10 deg.

What about a computer game? That is very strange, have you pressed ctrl alt delete to see what the cpu load is once you plug in the usb? If not, do that (xp I assume) and see if it jumps up. Does the computer feel slow when you plug in?
I am leaning more and more to a glitch in the thermometer system, which is highly suspect already.
Hey, do you have cool n quiet in there?

Totally strange... Beyond me, I was wondering if maybe the sudden activity took your cpu out of cool and quiet... but since not even intensive activities like dvd use can cause this heat, I dont get it.

Is there a noticeable change in the CPU fan speed when you plug in the USB drive? Possible short-circuit...?
