Firefox eating lots of CPU time

Right now I have 11 open tabs in Firefox and it is hovering between 15-30% of total CPU useage, totally idle, not opening any pages.

I am using the custom moox build as per http://moox.ws/tech/mozilla/firefox.htm - could this be the issue?

It can't be right that Firefox eats so much CPU time while being completely idle.

I have 18 tabs open split between 2 different firefox windows. I'm idle and it's jumping from 1-8%. That's on a 2.7GHz proc.

Some web pages refresh by themselves. That could be the problem. Have you tried the regular download from mozilla.org?

Your pages probably have a lot of Flash on them, that tends to use the CPU. Firefox on it's own shouldn't use much CPU.

Good point, I just installed a fresh build last night and didn't install any ad-blocking plugins yet.

    Off to grab 'em!

I'm using the Moox build too and don't see Firefox using much CPU at all. So it must be page-specific.

I've had that happen before & I'm pretty sure it's caused by flash. I've been using the Firefox Flash Blocker. It's very cool. It replaces all flash with a little grey "play" button that you can click if you want to see it. It noticibly speeds up page loads, and really, how often do you see flash that *isn't* some annoying ad.

You mean there's actually useful flash?

    Thanks for the link

Gotta say- I LOVE flashblock. Took them forever to get it updated for 1.0, but it's like having an old friend back. And between this and Adblock, kiss all those annoying things goodbye.

Great, after having installed adblock and flashblock I open the same tabs as before and now CPU useage is hovering just above idle.

    Good stuff
