    College Laptop

    Dear Sharky,

My parents arent letting me bring my rig to college for unknown reasons such as space and traveling it around.

I was wondering with about a 1500-2000 If anybody can stat up a notebook that will be able to run World of Warcraft at an average-decent play.

My dad doesnt want to get me a gaming one but i just want to be able to keep up with guys from time to time on WoW.

Can anybody give me any ideas to talk my dad into getting a decent card into it (other than games)

He doesnt know much about computers/notebooks.

    Thanks

    Zac

Just look at what video card it has.

Is this $1500-2000 including S&H, tax and extra warranty?

I would recommend specing out a dell inspiron 9300. They have a discount running right now. So far there pretty much starting at $1279. I would definately get the 256 6800 card upgrade so it will be able to play wow flawless. If you need a excuse for your dad why that card tell him its great for photo and video editing, powerpoint and project presentations, and great for watching dvds. Im sure he wont know much stuff about video cards. With specing one out I did a 1.6 pentinum m, 17" widescreen, 512 ram, 80g hard drive, 256mb 6800 starts at 1526 before taxes. Its just one input Im sure others will tell you to get another brand

For up to 2000 bucks, you can go pretty damn highend. You could either get a nice 15" / 17" notebook with a P-M, 1gb, mobile9700 or faster. Alternatively, you could pick up a 15" Powerbook with a mobile9700, which runs WoW pretty good too AFAIK (You'll have to buy a mac copy of the game though).

    D3fan with the

    1.6 pentinum m

is that only 1600 mhz or is it doubled?

Does the comp u spec come with a dvd player/cd burner?

is 1.6 ghz going to be powerful enough to take advantage of the vid card?

how bad is the next worst video card below the 256.

i also forgot to ask 2 questions.

For you laptop gamers do you buy a keyboard so it is easier to type and play games? I know a mouse is vital.

Also in colleges/dorms are desktops more popular or laptops?

Are online games popular in the majority of colleges?

CPU power is no longer rated as "more Mhz equals more power". Intel realized this error (as always late) and now sells their cpus with a 3 digit number. DO NOT compare the 'speed' of a laptop based on its Ghz number

I've got a 1.6GHz Pentium M laptop (Latitude D600). But it's got a crappy ATI Mobility 9000. It does okay on a number games, not so well on many newer games (e.g. Doom3). The video is the bottleneck, not the CPU -- so get good video and that CPU should be fine.

Depends on which apps you are running...
On internet/word processing and such, it's almost neck and neck...

But on more demanding things like games and video editing, laptops won't quite be as fast... or at least not for the same price. So you have to be sure of what you plan to use it for... otherwise, you will regret later...
