Please help with Cd Burning Error

Hi,

I back up data on a CD using a Sony Cd Writer and choose an option to Verify the data burned.

Lately I am getting an error message as follows and then I am not able to read the burned CD.

I use long file names unto 212 Characters on most of my files and folders and never had problems with it until now.

I am using Sonic CD writing Software that came with my Dell PC and Sony burner.

Can somebody please help as to what this error message means and how can I correct it?

are you using a CDRW and constantly overwriting it ?
Try a CD-R
I have no idea yet, what those errors mean.
Where does / how does the long filenames come into play here?

I do use CD-R and thats where errors show up.

If I choose not to verify data after the CD is burned then I can read the burned CD. But if I choose the option to Verify data after it is burned, then CD will not open & I get the message that the CD drive is not accesible.

I give large file names to most of my files so that I would know what is the contents of the file without opening it. Its a personal choice. But sometime if my file name exceeds 212 characters then I run into the problem of opening the file.

Would this help in finding the problem?

A couple of suggestions. First, have you run chkdsk/scandisk on your computer recently? If not, I would suggest that you do so. Secondly, you should clean up the junk files (temporary files) and then defrag.

have you tried different brands of cd-r? Also, try shortening your filenames and disable long filename option in cd burning options and see if that helps.

it seems also maybe that when you use the "verify option" - the burner software (nero?) will check the data against ALL files burned, whereas when you say 'you can read it" if not using verification, you likely only check a couple of files. Yes ,known long file name issues should be avoided.

Absolutely, as mentioned, clean up the Temporary Internet Cache, History, Recent, Temp, folders - and any other brower caches..Run the CHKDSK utility (2K/XP)

Get into the habit of creating shorter "Folder" names (DIRECTORY names) - so the PATH isn't so long (it's too many characters in the PATH to the file, not the filename itself per-se).Rename a few if necessary.

Don't burn Internet cache and files that contain Javascript and VBS which try and reach out to the internet every time it's accessed.

Try burning at a slightly slower speed.

Your problem is with the long file names.
There are imposed limits on the length of the filenames especially with the ISO-9660 file system that is usually used by most burnware. It's important to remember that the most common CD filesystem (ISO-9660 Level 1) only supports eight-character filenames with a three-character extension. The Joliet file system is slightly more accomodating, permiting up to 64 characters in a filename.

Some burnware will however will claim support for longer filenames, thus producing discs which are not readable.

Try the Sonic support community and while you are there you may want to see if there is a PX Engine update for the version of the software you are currently using.

You guys have given some great suggestions and I should get started with temp. internet files. Many times I have noted that to be a problem.

But this time I am not burning that though. I am burning Desktop and Favourites folders though, Favourite's link folder might have something to do?

As far as long file names go, I did lots of testing and I found Sonic ISO Level 2 was the solution for upto 232 character path. Almost 90 % of my files have long file names and there are are thousands of file that I created so changing or shortening them is almost immpossible. I have been burning them for last 2 years successfully with same brand of CD-R(LG)and same burner SONY and same speed 40X.

Again few days ago I burned almost entire CD with same folders and did not have any problem but this time I do remember giving a very long file name to a few files and I tried to find those files but I can't find those files. I did a search but I don't remember the file names and that is the big problem. I do remember creating them just a few days ago though.Any idea how can I find those files?

I better get to work with your suggestions. I really appreciate your kind help.
