Good all-around notebook
Hello
I´m seriously considering to take a loan to buy a laptop for the future. The reason is that I study computer science and I´ve never owned a laptop before. It would be a nice advantage to have a nice notebook which can last for a good number of years. I´m quite a newbie with notebooks.
The main priority is that the notebook can be versatile, and handle a lot of programming. Also, it must have a good battery life-time. And it would be quite nice if I could game a little on this one as well
I´m a previous hardcore-gamer, but this is not the reason. I´ve been looking into the Asus notebooks - which looks quite appealing. Such as the:
Asus M6800Ne and the Asus V6V. The Asus M6800Ne packs quite a punch with 1 GB of RAM, 2 GHz Centrino CPU, a nice 15,4 TFT screen, Radeon 9700 gfx, 80 GB harddrive etc. - and a weight of 2,7 Kg.
The Asus V6V is quite similar, except for a few specs. It has a x600 Radeon, 60 GB harddrive, 512 MB of RAM, 15,1 TFT screen and a slimmer design and weight of 2,4 Kg.
What do you guys think? Is it stupid to invest in one of the two? Right now i´m leaning towards the M6800Ne.

I have said it again and will say it again. Buy extended warranty!
BTW if your a CS major, that 1GB of memory is great! Don't want to be using Vistual Studio.Net 2003 and many other programs with 512MB (or less) memory

Hi freedonX
Thanks for the reply. Okay, extended warranty is noted.. yes, I also thought that the 1 GB memory could come in handy with regard to programming in general..
So you think that the Asus MNe6800 is the best of the two choices?

Okay. The laptop will cost 15395 kr., or $ 2700 USD, with everything included. The site is currently down and it is written in Danish. But here it is anyway:

$2,700!!!
IMO that's too expensive. Though I'm not familiar with prices in Denmark.
I bought this laptop 2 weeks ago.

The price 2700 $ includes all types of taxes in Denmark, so I don´t think it´s that expensive?
I checked the Dell laptop that you mentioned and it was actually more expensive than the Asus. So I presume that this price is still pretty good - taking into consideration it is in Denmark?

I always buy electronics with my AMEX card. They ADD a year to the warranty.
My last lappy hit the crapper 4yrs after purchase. From my experience, the extended is just a waste of money for me. A friend of mine has sent in his computer God knows how many times, so it is right for some people.

1) I've owned an M6BNE before. I switched to a Sony S360, and I couldn't be happier. See my sig for a comparitive S360 vs. M6BNE review.
2) You can get better battery life than the M6BNE. 2.5hrs-3hrs, I'd say.
3) Don't buy a gaming notebook unless you are SURE you will be gaming on the road. A gaming notebook adds weight, decreases battery life, shortens the notebook's replacement cycle (you must replace gaming notebooks every 2 years, instead of 4 years for non-gaming), and generally costs more. Be SURE that you will need a notebook for GAMING before buying one.

i was reading about asus notebooks on notebookreviews and they recommend some site called proportable.
i built a test asus there. kinda impressed with the price.
you might try it.
oh..and i couldn't afford it so i didn't buy it. i cannot attest to anything about the company other than it exists and notebook review says it's okay.

Well, i´ve already orderedt the Asus laptop, so it´s a bit too late i´m afraid.
However, for some reason I wasn´t able to find any Sony laptop in Denmark? I´ve tried all the major sites over here...

From everything I've seen, you'll most likely be happy with the Asus M6BNE, I almost bought one of those myself a year or so ago. But I went a different route only because of a better price on an Acer that I couldn't pass up. It's a good looking, well built, solid laptop with multiple options for configurations.
