nVidia 77.72 Driver video playback problem - temporaly workaround!
Has anyone with a Geforce card tried installing nVidia's latest 77.72 and tried playing back videos. Notice how the colours are all washed out and overly bright?
Well I had this problem and found a temporary workaround for it until nVidia fix it. Go to Geforce Control Panel --> Color Correction. In the upper left drop down select 'Overlay'. Now notice how the graph is curved and adjusting the Gamma won't fix it, that's why the colors are messed up in videos. To fix it under Color Profile select 'Advanced Mode' and the graph should turn into a straight line. Click Apply.
When I had this problem I visited a few other forums and noticed other people having the same problem, so I though I'd post a fix incase people here are having issues with this.
Also anyone noticed how nVidia claim these are WHQL drivers yet when you go to install them they are not. Seems like nVidia rushed these drivers out for the 7800 launch and now we have buggy drivers.

Bah, I think I found the real cause...
Driver I have is 16MB, but when I went back to nVidia website the driver is 20MB. ***!!? I have both files, both have same version number, not just file name but installer says 77.72. Except one I downloaded originally was 16MB now it's 20MB. Someone at nVidia uploaded the wrong file!!!!. nVidia realised mistake and replace it with correct one, thanks nvidia

No way! nVidia has a driver problem!?
Sorry, but I couldn't resist. I'm so tired of clueless people saying they won't own ATi cards because of drivers.
Glad you found a temporary workaround.

uh, i had no problems with mine - then again, i ran the display optimization wizard right after i rebooted.
also, they were listed as WHQL candidates until today, i think.

*** is going on with Nvidia
Ok I thought Nvidia had good drivers but I just wasted 4 hours trying to get my video to look right because of a driver I downloaded that should have been fixed 2 weeks ago. Hmm maybe its time to give ATI a try.

...

People should really read the Release Notes before installing drivers.
Here's a quote from the 'Open Issues' section.
GeForce 6800/6800GT/6800 Ultra, Windows XP, Windows XP Professional x64: NVIDIA Overlay gamma controls under Standard mode do not work properly, resulting in overly dark or overly bright video.
To work around this issue:
From the NVIDIA control panel, click the Color Correction menu tree item.
From the Color Correction page, click the Apply color changes to list arrow and select All, then click Restore Defaults.
Click Apply.
It's a shame they released the driver with such an bug though.

No, it's the same driver.
Microsoft takes some time to do WHQL testing on drivers, but nvidia may need the drivers out immediately, in this case to support the new 7800GTX card. So, they end up having one driver without WHQL and another with WHQL files uploaded later. They are exactly the same, only difference being in file size.

Yes, and if you try and change ANY setting in let's say Windows Media Player you will have to go back into the drivers and do what you just posted.
Nvidia's drivers are a POS and I am proud to say that I now have an ATI AIW X800 XT.
