Will PC2700 work in my Dell c840?
I have a Lattitude c840 laptop that I used at work. I am purchasing it for cheap and doing some things to tweak it to give it a bit more life (hope to use it for another year or two). Right now it has a meager 256 mb pc2100 200 pin so-dimm in it. I am looking at some CAS 2 memory from Patriot on Newegg, or just standard stuff, but most of it is pc2700 200 ping so-dimm. I am pretty sure this stuff will still work in my system, but will just be running at a lower clock speed than what it is rated for. Am I correct? Thanks!

That is correct, though in general matching the RAM is never a bad idea.

Yeah, I plan to just put one stick in probably, and then at a later date pick up another stick. I do not think this laptop support dual channel, or could it? It only has two slots for memory. I may splurge and just get two sticks of 512 or even a single 1 gig chip, but I think the single chips are a tad pricey.

Oh, I thought you were planning on running them together. Yeah, no matter which way you go you should be ok, though if you do mix match the RAM, run memtest86 just to check to make sure everything is running ok.

Those C840's are the P4's, right? I don't think that they're dual channel, but if you're running WinXP, you'll need at least the 512 MB of RAM to run decently, especially with those systems.
