    Ermm, they stole your modem? I'm a little lost Here I was thinking about moving to Comcast, but if they are gonna' be busting into my house to steal my modem, forget it.

    Now $45 is starting to yield some justification.
    Have you tried DrTCP on BOTH and view/compare the settings for each ?
    it doesn't make sense b/c I can get 5mbps using win98

    Awesome, people talking about broadband speeds. There's nothing better than living on a good college campus for Internet speed. Highest I've done on a speed test here was about 23Mbps, and the reason it wasn't higher is because the test servers for the most part are slower than my connection. I've downloaded things around 5 to 6 megabytes per second before on good servers That translates to close to 50Mbps. I'll miss this when I graduate...
    Apple iMac 20" :: Intel Core Duo @ 2.0GHz (Yonah) :: 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 RAM :: Western Digital 250GB SATA HDD :: ATi Radeon X1600 256MB :: Matsushita UJ-846 DVD-+RW

    Mac OS X 10.4.8. Booya, Windows users.
    Disclaimer: THIS IS A JOKE. Thanks.

    DrTCP came up with blank windows in both 2000 and XP so there is nothing to view/compare. The only thing it detected was my network card.

    It appears that I can hit the 6Mbps mark in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP, but I can only hit 3700-3800 Kbps in Windows 2000 and in Windows 98SE it's even less at 1800Kbps.

    I suspect it's the cable modem. I never had these issues with my previous cable modem, just this Motorola.

    I tried several recommended tweaks from several of the broadband sites and all of them cut my speed even more dramatically.

    I'm through playing with the Registry. Every tweak just makes it worse.
    It is what it is, I'm done.

    i'm assuming you mean 550 kilobytes per second, which translates to 4.4 megabits per second.

    just multiply or divide by 8. pretty easy.

    My speed is still 4.3mbps, but so far the problem with Comcast increasing it's latency in the middle of the day has stopped. So that's a pretty good thing.

    ooops - maybe it's not for 2K/XP then ...hmmm

    DrTCP is a Registry tweaking tool (but GUI ) for all those various settings you see - so it's much faster (except for the reboots for settings to take affect)

    Use/Try these settings for 98;

    I too have a Motorola modem (Surfboard) - and here's a recent Test D/l and I'm getting 719KB/sec

    PM me ...if you want the access code from browser to view the modem settings/config/tests/status

    ...erm - unless you're on some kind of college/university welfare program.... that's 8mbps son - the CAPITAL B = MegaBYTE -
    Lowercase b = Megabit (8 bits to 1 BYTE).....though usually both [MB] is used for megabyte -- and [mbps] is used for megabit

    note - not too shabby at all though, 8mbps translates to 1000KB/sec download - compared to my 5mbps or ~612KB/sec down

    My speed is 5674.5 Kbps, and the good news is I pay roughly $45.00 CAD to get it.

    Ive had Comcast's 6mb/768kb line for around 2 years and have been pleased. I wish they raised the upload to a full 1.5mb, but the download speeds are great, on fast servers i can expect 600KB+ per second.
